I like to leave about 1/2" of space between the BD and the tom. Works great.

You might be on to something here. They make a clear protective covering for the front of cars/trucks thats very resistent to rock chips and scratches. It's not permanant and you can't even tell it's there. My boss has it on all of his fancy cars. Let me check into it a little further and I will get back to you.

See and you guys made a joke out of my thread, no harm, we all like to have fun. the film you are talking about is the 3M invisible film for the front of cars to protect from stone chips, Thanks drummer boy, I used to own an auto detailing business and my bad for not thinking of this first GREAT IDEA!!!!Bowing

more than likely the scratches will come from one particular area on your rack toms bottom rim. to not alter the shell at all i would suggest putting the felt on the rim itself just in the 1 or 2 inch area that may touch.

I do think that towels (even if they are in the right colour) might be a little bit to eyecatching.

What I used 20 years ago was a piece of transparent tube that I made a cut in (lenghtwise). Then I just pushed the tube on to the lower hoop of my tom and, almost invisible, I had a soft, unvisible protection for my bass drum.
