Help with dateing Slingerland tom please.

Loading...

Hi guys,

Found what I think is an old 1940s - 50s Slingerland 16" x 16" floor tom.

I've never seen these legs that are bent at the bottom or the hardware that attaches them to the drum on an old slingerland before but they seem to be original with no extra holes or any sign of anything odd.

Looks to be Mahogany 3 ply interior with 2 1/4" reinforcing rings, only two rings. There is nothing written on the inside.

Has one double muffler, no holes where another might have been.

Has both stick chopper hoops with the top being Slingerland engraved.

I have a 1951-53 Black Diamond Peal bass drum but the pattern on the floor tom seems a bit bigger in pattern size and not as much black in it.

Would really love to find out more info if anyone has any.

All the best,

Gregg.

Those floor tom legs & mounts look like the legs & mounts Gretsch was using in the 50s. On Gretsch drums, those FT mounts were called Gladstones.

I know most (if not all) of Gretsch's hardware was made by Walberg & Auge back then, so perhaps Gretsch and Slingy were sourcing the same parts. I wonder if this gives a clue as to age.

...and that's where my knowledge runs out. Perhaps one of the real historians on here can pitch in?

Kits:
1950s Gretsch Name Band in Midnight Blue Pearl (13/16/22/14sn)
1965/66 Ludwig Club Dates rewrapped in Black Diamond Pearl (12/15/20)

Hi Gregg, That floor tom is a late 1930s or the first part of 1940s Slangerland Radio King floor tom[[if you look on the rim it will say this]]...The floor tom legs and mounts are called gladstone these were used on gretsch drums from the 40s to 50s..so that would date the drum sometime in the 1940...What color is the felt on the muffler if its red puts the drum back in the 30s,,if black puts the drum in the 40s...The floor tom leg mounts could have been added at a later time also...Mikey

Big thanks guys,

My questions so quickly and efficiently executed.

The colour of the felt on the muffler is red which as Mikey points out puts the drum into the 1930s, no legs on floor toms in those days I think...they used to puy them in a cradle if I remember reading somewhere.

Pitty the owner didn't buy a set of Slingerland legs and brackets instead of the Gretsch's but I must say for this age they still work perfectly.

Can anybody give me an idea of what price this drum would be worth?

Gregg.

1946; classic example of tom features - this one with small beavertails versus streamlines that were also used at that time - when Slingerland started back up post-WWII. Slingerland floor tom legs came in 1947.

That's a 40's tom made to use a cradle. The shell only has two reinforcing rings and the later 2-pad red muffler along with the Beavertail lugs. The Gretsch mounts were added later...
