20's Ludwig Super Before/after pics

Some parts I used Electrolysis, a sketchy but effective process involving a bucket of water and a battery charger. I used a drill with a drum key bit and some steel wool with Brasso to clean the tension rods. I took a nut from a lug and said drill with a long socket to clean the heads of the tension rods. The rest was brasso, super fine sand paper, steel wool and patience. I did in the end wind up with an extra small spring. Anyone know what it does?

OMG that is one beautiful drum! Is the wood walnut or mahogany? Also what type of head do you have on it? Great job!

The head is a Remo Fiberskin and the shell is a one ply Mahogany. Oh, and the badge I took off the bass drum. Thanks everyone, I feel all warm and fuzzy now!

That small spring (usually two of them) goes into one side of the internal Super Mechanism before you attach the connecting rod...it keeps the rod "spring loaded" (for lack of a better description)...no big deal as the mechanism still works, correct? For future reference, if you ever need more of those little springs just use a ball point pen spring and cut it to match, you will probably only need a 1/4" or so +/-...hope that helps...

Hi Gretsch that stole xmas,

I'm not here to make you wrong, this is just my opinion...I would have left the original badge on the drum. I agree that the "new" badge looks way better but the vintage value of a drum is reduced significantly when the original badge is removed. Now if you are going to keep the drum and enjoy it for many years then no problem but when you do go to sell it you will need to disclose that the badge has been removed...collectors would prefer the original badge (not removed) to a better version re-attached...this is only one collector's opinion so please do not take any offense as this is not my intention...your drum is still a beauty and your restoration was well thought out and nicely done!
