How much could my Premier kit be worth?

Loading...

Hello there, I would like to sell a drum kit i aquired, but i am wondering what it might be worth. It is either a 1968 303 Outfit OR a 1971 PD303 Outfit. One can not tell as the same picture is used in the different catalogue pages

The sizes for the drums are as follows, Snare: 14", Toms: 12", 14" and 16", Kick: 20"

I have some of the original ajax symbals (i think original) The 18" crash and the hi hat cymbals, one of the is quite beat up i think.

I have the original hi hat stand and the original foot pedal.

i also have two original cybal stands and the snare stand

There are new Evans bashers on everything and new Evans reverbs on the floor tom and the two mid toms.

there is some work that needs doing i.e. a few nuts, bolts, screws, washers need replacing and maybe some asthetic work. probably some tuning :P. It is in a black pearl finish (K in the colour catologue) which is original.

I have what i think are the original cases for the kit, they are a hard navy blue plastic, the leather straps are pretty much gone, but its nice to have. i have a stool, the chrome's gone on it and its not really very good, but a guy at premier thought it looked about the same age.

I don't know what kind of wood it is, if you could recommend a way of finding out, or if you know of anything else which i could check to find the date/value, that would be great.

Any ideas on what this is worth?

For anyone interested in buying, contact me and we can work out something. I am based in the UK and would prefer collection, or meeting half way or something, unless you are close to Hereford, then i could probably deliver it for you.

Thanks guys.

i'll post up some pictures in my next post :P

Here are some pictures of the kit. (sorry for the poor quality). The little african drum isnt for sale :L. the hi hat stand and foot pedal in the pictures arent for sale, i use them because the originals are in fairly bad shape, useable, just not as good.

Thanks guys, even a rough estimate would be nice. Also if you know of anyone i should contact as a possible buyer, that would be amazing.

I see, even with the bad pictures, different era drums. Badges and lugs are different. I can give a better idea of dates if you take close ups of the hardware (lugs, mounts, throw, spurs, badges, etc).

[COLOR="Blue"]Good eye, Richard. I am guessing the 14" tom was an add-on (?) It looks to have a different badge than the others...and slightly different lugs than the rest ? or maybe it's the 12" which doesn't match the rest in those categories.

12-14 up top wouldn't be typical....a 14" rack on a 20" bass rig ? - very unusual....so that's why I am thinkin' that second rack is the unmatching culprit (?)

No huge deal...assuming you have 4 pieces which DO match....that's a VERY nice kit. Looks to have original rack tom hardware, which would be a big plus.

Likely 3-ply birch shells with re-rings. Are they blonde natural finish inside with rings at the bearing edges ???? If so.....beautiful shells...actually...my favorite of all time. The old Premier birch shells just had a bit more oomph to them than mahog or maple.

Cymbals not worth much of anything, maybe $50.

Is the hardware Premier ? ('hat stand, bass pedal, snare stand, throne) ? If so, that's about $125-150 there. If just generic then maybe $70-100.

A matched 4-pc kit (incl. snare) is worth a good $600-700. The extra rack tom another $60-75 or so.

Something like that. Assuming no major issues like extra holes, messed-up wrap, very bad pitting of chrome, etc.....

A lovely kit!

Just be aware though, The different lugs on the floor tom are usual - for some reason Premier made them different on the floors, so that at least could match with the rest, if not the 14".

I've seen matching Premier sets like that up on e-bay for £500 - £600, but it does vary when you get down to original hardware and condition. The snares alone are becoming very collectible and if it turns out that the rest of the kit does not match, you may make more selling the snare separately.

Tama Superstar, 22, 22, 16, 14, 13 Desert Burst
Premier Genista, 22, 16, 13, 12 Black Lacquer
Premier Genista, 20, 14, 10 and snare Black Lacquer
Premier Resonator 22, 16, 14, 13 poly creme/black
Zickos 22, 16, 14, 13, clear acrylic and snare

Premier 303 was typically a 20, 12, 14, 16, snare - arrangement.

Here's a page from the 72 cat along with the readable text portion. The 20 was standard, as was the 12 and 14. The 68 cat shows the same info.

The B in the B303 was for the larger bass (22 inch). The 303 was just that...303.

[COLOR="Blue"]Exactly- a 16" deep FT wouldn't have had the double-ended lugs - 14's had that but not 16's. l thought Richard was pointing out a discrepancy between the 2 rack toms - again the photos are hard to read but looks like the lugs & maybe badges are different on the 2. lf the same then it probably is some version of the 303 (and - as always - Mcj pulls one from outta his electricit... um ...memory bank ...again :o). lf so - up the value to about $750-850usd

Yes, the Hardware is all Premier, however, i have no way of knowing if the throne is.

They are definitely natural finish on the inside. A guy who kinda did them up a bit for me said their was some sort of stamp on the inside, a tuning company or something. Do you think it would be worth having a look?

I'm kind of in two minds about selling, because when i decided i would sell them, it was because i didnt think they sounded/played very nice and i wanted to buy say a new mapex kit for somewhere around £500. Buuuut, it sounds like i have a rather nice kit, could it be that the tuning is just wrong for it being the reason for the undesirable sound? any tips?

Also, if any of you are near by in the UK (I'm in Hereford, Midlands), I'd be happy for you to come and take a look at the kit to maybe see if we can shed a little more light on the kit, as it sounds like a bit of an oddity :L

Also, forgot to mention, the Bass and the snare have what could be the original reverb skins. Does Everplay Extra ring any bells?

Thanks for all your help guys, I just need to find a buyer now... :L

Yes. Everplay-Extra was standard Premier.
