Why so different?

From MastroSnare

I use pine. Oddly the cheapest wood is amongst the best. Most of the "better" woods sound inferior. Modern plywood doesn't work for me because they used plastic glue. Pine has the downside of being soft and dents easily, so you have to treat the speaker like a guitar. What a concept - the speaker is a musical instrument!I attached a pic of a JBL I did. Also of utmost importance is the finish... violin makers have been perfecting that for centuries.

MastroSnare; I also collect vintage guitars and amps, and you took the words from my keyboard, pine cabinets are what the top vintage companies used in the day, as you mentioned fender amp cabinets, also gibson. valco, and i can go on,not to knock pine but top grade pine is good stuff and a very good tone wood, with the signature sounds you mentioned you forgot celestion, and eminence speakers, fender amp. marshall amps. and vox amps all are very distinct sounding amps, your cabinet is good looking stuff.

Sorry. So anyway back to the cabinet. Very nice, I love the grill design. What type of joinery are you using? I have been wanting to make a repro speaker cabinet for a 64 Fender Bassman head that I have.

Well, they do use poplar, which isn't too different. We're basically talking about the huge forest that used to, and still does, cover the top of the northern hemisphere. As you know, it was once one big forest, and Xmas trees grew differently in different places, but they're all Xmas trees. Even amongst "pine" there's incredible variation.

Most pine isn't that strong, not near as strong as plywood, and I imagine that that's why it isn't common for drums. Plywood, with it's cross laminations, won't warp like pine too.

p.s. sorry I didn't mean to derail the thread, but hopefully there was some pertinence! And lucky I will pm you about the joinery.

Hi, Wayne.

I have had a similar experience with bass drums -except the bigger sound came from a Ludwig 14 X 20.

Some drums that have "it" and some don't. And it doesn't even matter if the drums are matched from the factory or not. This one bass drum just has it. The rest of the kit sounds good, too, but the bass drum is just one of those "Can do no wrong" drums.

I think it's the same with guitars, too. For whatever reason(s), the pieces just come together in such a way that everything just sings. Maybe it's the way the grains line up. Maybe it's the density or dryness of the wood. But, some things just have it. Maybe it's magic.Burger Kin

Wayne, it is the same reason that on a double bass kit, you can never kit the 2 kicks to sound exactly the same.. too many variables.. :D

No wonder drummers drink a lot!!Coffee Break2.....Animal..could be that there is a difference in strength between arms and legs...Your right leg is much stronger than the left if you,re right handed....i think.
