Late 70's Gretsch Kit

Loading...

I have a late 70's set of 3 ply natural maple Gretsch Drums. I have a 10" rack tom; 12" & 14" Concert tom; 18" floor tom; and 22" & 24" bass drums. I have no idea what they are worth, and the only resources I have down here in Houston are vintage dealers who want to buy them from me. I would feel better if I could get an uninterested party's opinion, before I put them on the market. I am buying a custom kit for $4000.00 and I am interested in getting top dollar for the Gretsch kit to supplement as much of that cost as I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated. You can reply to donrosecrans@yahoo.com. Thanks so much!!!

3 ply Gretsch from the 70s?? This is not right. Post some pictures if you can and we will have a much better idea of what we are talking about. The concert toms do not pull in nearly as much, but the other pieces can bring in a decent amount. Pictures will help us give you a reasonable value quote.

I am not sure of the ply, I just know they are thinner than the other drums I've owned. Here are the pics per your request. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Hi

The photos are not coming through for me. Are they posted?

From the information I have Gretsch went to 6ply in 58. The shells were the same thickness (the ply layers were thinner on the 6ply). I know this first hand because I have a 4 pc with a mix of the 58 3 and 6 ply (my floor is 6ply).

I would try to get in touch with Gretsch historian Mr. Harry J. Cangany Jr. (Harry Cangany). He's on facebook and also associated with "No So Modern Drummer." If he doesn't know - he will know who you should contact.

Nice drums you have there!

Your set is most likely from '79 or early '80. Definitely 6ply Jasper shells, as Kona stated, the 3ply shells were switched to 6ply in the late 50s and were used up until the early 2000s. If the kit was purchased originally like this I would say it was marketed as a rock set up of some sort, hence the 2 BDs, huge floor tom, and concert toms.

Depending on condition, as long as there are no holes or added hardware or missing parts or anything like that, I would guess you could easily get $1500-$2000ish for it. The concert toms aren't usually a draw these days, but I think if you found the right buyer, looking for a rock set up, you won't have any problems moving it. Natural finish isn't really rare at all, especially in the stop sign badge era, but still a great kit, and appears to be in pretty good condition.
