Ludwig Blue/Olive Badge kit at MusicGoRound

Loading...

Hello,

I'd like to get your opinions on the following drumset- it's at musicgoround.

It's a blue/olive badge 4 piece set, white, sizes are 13, 14, 16, and 22. I think it's circa 1979-ish. Looks like the kick drum rims/hoops (front and back) have been replaced. Interior of drums has the grey (granitone?) coating. I cannot tell how many ply's these are. All the lugs/mounts are there but a couple of the interior bolts/washers are missing or are slightly rusted. Only the 14 inch tom has an interior muffler (why don't the others?). Seams are visible but not too bad. Seems like it is all there (tom mounts, legs, lugs, etc). A few scratches and marks; needs a good cleaning and new heads also.

Price is $399. I've been looking for a white set. So, is this an okay deal? And what are the pros and cons?

Thanks!

$399 is a very good deal for a Ludwig kit of that quality. As long as there are no extra holes I'd pick it up.

Get it and post pics when it's set up.

If insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, is it insane to practice?

I cannot tell how many ply's these are.

You mention that it has the spec insides. Because of that paint and the B/O badge, it is not the 4 ply Rockers or Standards. That infers it's 3 ply shells. You can confirm this by checking for rerings. Rerings = yes = 3 ply shells.

Thanks for your replies...I am new to all this (mostly a guitarist) and it's very helpful.

I was able to get some more information on the set-

First of all, the interior coating is more of a flat gray, and not the "speckled" stuff I've seen on the internet...So it may just be gray paint (?) and not granitone (it's identical on each drum).

And here's what I can make of the shells/plys:

9 x 13 tom (ser# 2,14x,xxx), 4-ply

10 x 14 tom (ser# 2,05x,xxx), 6-ply, with internal muffler

16 x 16 floor tom (ser# 2,14x,xxx), 4-ply

16 x 22 bass drum (ser# 2,14x,xxx), 6-ply, with the angled/squared heavy duty style floor spurs and rubber feet

So, does that mean this may be a transitional (blue/olive) kit or maybe early 80's? Would it still be worth the $399 price? I should also mention that the kit would only be for basement jamming and/or recording (trying to upgrade from my cheapo no-name kit i've had for years).

Thanks!

Even for that price, the sound will still be FAR SUPERIOR to that cheapo no-name kit you already have, even if it is a Rocker set. It's still gonna sound like a set of Ludwigs. :D

My guess is the 14 was added later.

I would jump on those for $399!!!! (Did you get them??)

I honestly take the mufflers off all my 3-ply Ludwig toms. Never use them, except a little on the snare drum.

That is indeed a good price on those. Scoop them up!

UPDATE

okay so i ended up picking up the kit...they were having a sale, so i went ahead and pulled the trigger. I also picked up a Ludwig Acrolite snare (roughly the same vintage) to go with it. I spent a couple days taking it apart and cleaning the whole thing, bought new heads (evans ec2?) and had some drummer friends help me tune it up. It cleaned up nice, and sounds great.

(unfortunately it came with a Pearl kick drum skin...hopefully that will be rectified soon)
