humidity and vintage drum shells

Loading...

I have been beautiful 60's vintage slingerland set with a 20 inch bass..I just have not been able to get the bass out of this that I thought I should get..I have messed with heads and still no luck..I installed an ambassador coated for the kick and clear for a resonnant and get a ton of overtones but not a lot of bass..I did not install the felt strip that was on the orignal head so I am going to do that and see how that effects the overtones etc..

I discussed this with a drum expert type guy at the local music shop I go to and he told me he had some issues with a set once that he had bought and that the sound was just not vibrant and alive..so he put them into a humid room or added humidity because he believed the shells were way to dry..and it worked for him..once the shells absorbed a bit he said the sound came back to the shells

anybody have any suggestions on how to address the bass drum..it seems like my toms are ok but then again maybe they can be better than what they are if humidity is a problem for them also

comments anyone

As an ex builder, all i can say is NO HUMIDITY!!..I,ve never heard that before,it goes against everything i,ve been taught. You will hear from other players hear about edges, heads, out of round?,6 lug,8 lug...etc.They will find the answer for you...good luck.

I don't know how to answer that so called drum expert with except WHAT tha ^$%^& is he taking about, take what he said and run it through the paper shredder, take the clear head off and get a smooth white powerstroke 3 put it in place of the clear you remove, and that with the front white coated head will have you 90% in the ball park, also for a very quick reference get some moon gel pads, place a couple on the front head and you'll be a happy camper, the felt strip works but it takes two people to get it right quickly, because you will have to remove the front head several times to get the felt strip right, i'm from north carolina and believe me we have humidity, tell your drum guy bring his drums down here i'll charge him a small fee to let him set his kit up at my house

thought it sounded a bit far fetched...thats why I asked...just need to come up with the right configuration..since I have not heard a vintage slingerland before I actually may not have an issue but compare to my modern drumset the bass is not as strong..

I just realized you had the clear on the front, as i said before, put the white coated on the front, get a smooth white powerstroke 3 for the back get (2) cans of moongel dampening pads experiment with how many pads you like on the front head you'll be all smiles Clapping Happy2

Ok my turn to chime in.

Evans makes a kick side head that has a built in overtone ring.

I have had a great deal of success with this and a standard front head.

Tunning to the drum is also a big part of the program their is a range that the drum itself wants to be in.

and I wanted to let you know that i found a flobeam in England its on its way!!

I actually have the original heads that came with the set but I took them off because i wanted to save them for some future time when and I do sell it off..I wanted to be able to play so I went out and bought some new heads etc..I think I will re install the old heads , tune it up a bit and see what the originals do for me..when I got the set I took it apart and cleaned it good, polished and reassembled but never put the old heads back on..maybe I can get some reference with these.. they are intack
