Aquairian American Vintage heads

Where is the best place to order/ buy these heads? There isn't much selection here in the bean fields of Arkansas.

I called Roy @ Aquarian and he recommended a drum shop to me, but they didn't have thme in stock and seemed uninterested in a small order for a couple of snare heads.

I live in a small town, and with only two music stores around, I have found that ordering on-line is the way to go. If you hit the "free shipping" specials, or order enough to qualify for free shipping it works even better. I have to wait a few days, but I can get what I want at a substantial cost savings over the local music store.

The heads are for a 40's Ludwig snare that somebody stripped and covered with a mahogany lamination. I've not used the American Vintage heads yet, but have used Aquarian heads in the past, since I once worked for a music store and had access to every brand and model. I used to order heads and accessories from Roy Burns in those days. Then, owner of our store retired, another store took over, and then Guitar Center "Wal-Marted" them out of business. The local GC doesn't seem interested in filling a small order either, and I can't find an online source that stocks them.

My usual choice of available heads are Remo coated blackdot or Ambassador batter and medium weight bottom (I used to like the old Ludwig translucent snare side heads a lot).

stallwart good ole GC it's sad to go there and know more than the person standing behind the counter, you know remo will special make the heads a little oversized, but it will take a 6 month cycle ouch!! they twice a year stop regular production and 2 days out of the year fill special needs, back to the aquarians they feel find of rubbery and for my ears i don't like em, one suggestion was interstate music, also musicians friend, as kevins suggested a certain dollar amount and you get free shipping. roy burns is he great or what!! you call the company and you talk to the man, who does that any more!!!

You might try Fork's Drum Closet. They have some of these in stock at their Nashville store. Great folks to deal with. Check their website or give them a call.

You know, I should have thought of Fork's. A fellow drummer friend of mine in Tennessee shops there all the time. I haven't been there since 1980 or so.

I just found the heads in stock at Interstate Music and ordered them. It's strange that Musician's Friend, GC and a few others don't appear to have them on hand.

Thanks for the quick responses and suggestions!!

For those interested and who haven't used these heads, I'll report on them when I get them. I expect a warmer fatter tone, but will be looking for response and range. Stay tuned............get it???Laughing H
