Slingerland StudioKings

Hi VDF,

I'm not sure if these apply to the vintage section but maybe someone can help as I've received some great answers on previous Slingerland questions. I bought a set of Slingerland StudioKings made in Nashville and I'm trying to pinpoint a date for them given the serial numbers. It's a 5 piece maple kit 10/12/14/20 and matching 10 lug snare. All shells are virgin and have what appear to be very Gretsch like diecasts all around with RIMS. It's a factory matched kit as all the serial numbers are consecutive including the snare. Anyone know if these were special order given the fact all of the serial numbers are consecutive? and was this common practice? Overall this kit sounds great and appears very well made. I've tried to do some research but there's not a lot of info out there available and the website for Slingerland is like area51. Any idea of the value on these and how many were made and if they are still made? I tried to find some prices but apparently these just materialized out of thin air as no one will admit to ever selling a set new. Given Slingerland's proud history and it's tragic demise would these have a place among their predecessors?

any insight is always greatly appreciated!

Reference this thread.

That should get you started on narrowing down your kit. There's actually quite a bit of info on these drums, but because they were not made for dozens and dozens of years...it just seems limited.

Hey mcjnic,

As always many thanks for the thread-I should have seen that. Although not true Slingerlands they will be well played! Maybe not "well" but I'll bash the heck outta them anyways.

many thanks!

My experience with Slingerland/Gibson Studio Kings was in late 1999 and 2000. Then, I worked for a music retailer in Arkansas who stocked one of the kits during the last year of operation.

They are truly well made drums with an emphasis on the modern player's needs with the prestige of a vintage American name.

I heard a few months ago from another music store owner that there is a new plant with a skeleton staff for Tobias electric basses and Slingerland drums in Conway, Arkansas (30 miles from me) that was not up to speed then, but might be waiting for the economy to turn before ramping up production. I base this assumption on the fact that it was reported that a Slingerland kit and other items were displayed in the reception area. We shall see if these drums ever reappear.

I had a set of Nash Slingerlands around that same time period ('99-'00) in the same 20,10,12,14 config as your drums. Slingerland offered several different configurations, so not at all surprised your serial numbers are consecutive.

They are very well made drums and offered beautiful finishes. The Studio Kings were definately high end and actually had many endorsements. Too bad they went away. I wish I still had my kit. Enjoy yours!

I was with sling for 15 years......Ill try to help......It doesnt look very old though.....REAL Radio Kings were only made in NIles up to about the 60's

lonecomic@yahoo.com......Please take better interior shots...

Name tags / numbers meant little as the guys usually just grabbed them out of a box and slapped them on in Niles....My guess is the drums were made in the late 80's but probably 90's....

There doesnt seem to be a reinforcing hoop either....Radio kings had them...
