67 Slingerland set v. 62 Ludwig....

Really, I promise, I'm getting closer to actually buying something!

So I've been looking at this kit on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190359609991

I pretty much had my heart set on a 1962 Ludwig Super Classic (just 3-piece shell kit). But I've been looking at this 1967 Slingerland kit for a few days, and I have heard mixed reviews of Slingerland drums. But I have no idea myself and would love to hear what The Experts says about them, including any insights about this kit/model. Thank you as always!

I own Ludwig's and slingerlands and both are world leader in drums for a reason you cannot go wrong with either set, the brass krupa snare drum is so sweet, just decide on which flavor you want and pull the trigger Cool1

The only drawback to the Slingy kit is the finish on the bass/tom mount. For a short period, they did not use chromed ones. They are easy to come by and you could change it out (if you so desired)...so it's not a deal killer.

I do have another thing to add to what my fellow forum mcjnic member said, the push button floor tom leg mounts are sometimes a PAIN, the toms are held in place by spring tension and a lot of the time they become compressed over time and the floor tom will start to till to one side while playing, just giving you a heads up on that, and with shipping your looking at $1300.00 total, i have also enclosed a ebay link for my very good friend's music store in greenville sc, freddie wooten is the store owner call him tell him what you are after he will find you a set or may have one already, he is a vintage drum geek like me and does it for the love of drums he will sell you what you need and want not just to make a sell, this is his user id on ebay palmettokid

Riiiight, thanks for reminding me! Last month a tried a similar Slingerland set at Steve Maxwells here in NYC (ridiculously overpriced, natch), and after a few hits to the floor tom, the legs started slipping. The guy working there, while super-nice, was like, "Oh, you can find replacements online easily, newer ones will hold up better." I didn't really like that aspect of the floor tom....

And yah, it'd be 1300 IF no one else bids. ...

It's so hard making these decisions...I'm trying to stop myself from being locked in on Ludwigs....

My drumming style is sorta a strange mix of 1960s-style Clyde Stubblefield and Pete Thomas circa 1979... funky, indie-rock punky.... not a heavy-metal guy, not a jazzbo guy....

It's a tough choice. That Slingy kit is gorgeous, though! The shells between Ludwig and Slingerland are very similar. I have no experience with the Set-O-Matic mount. That Slingerland blue glass is a really unique finish -much less common than regular blue sparkle (which is very common to Ludwig). Plus, you get the snare drum and the pedals. -It appears to be a well-kept set!

It seems to me that you could do better on price for these. Strikes me as a bit high. I've seen more complete kits in very good condition go for less these days. Just something to consider.

With that said...

That is a very nice finish.

I just noticed the claws and t-rods do NOT match. That might be an indicator of a bass drum that has had the front head removed and played as a single-head drum when it was fashionable to do so back in the day.....which may be a red flag for bearing edge damage -maybe. You might want to ask about that. At first, I thought the set might have been one of those "I lost interest in drumming right away and put the set in my closet and forgot about it for 40 years..." kind of thing. But those non-matching claws and t-rods might be worth a query.

DOH! I just read the description in the auction listing. :o The seller did reveal the replaced parts. Sounds like it's as-described.
