I'd say the best advice is drag your butt to a store and try them out. The expensive ones are infinitely adjustable.

I'm sorry to hear you won't be draggin 2 kicks around any more..... Hurting

I've played double bass for quite a few years too, but the good old Tama Iron Cobra is the best double pedal I've played, and it's the one I have now. The only thing I did is replace the flat beaters you get with it with a pair of old Pearl quads, so I have a felt head choice to if I need it. If you are a wood beater fan, then you could use those. Just personal opinion - I don't care for those modern flat beaters and prefer something with a little more weight.

You can have the action however you want, and I just find that it responds really well.

Tama Superstar, 22, 22, 16, 14, 13 Desert Burst
Premier Genista, 22, 16, 13, 12 Black Lacquer
Premier Genista, 20, 14, 10 and snare Black Lacquer
Premier Resonator 22, 16, 14, 13 poly creme/black
Zickos 22, 16, 14, 13, clear acrylic and snare

There truly is nothing like a speedking in feel on the market, other than a speedking. Its a compression spring design which has a different feel than anything else on the market today. The Trick pedals are probably the closest you will come to the feel of a speedking, but the price is rather high. Everything else on the market has a spring that stretches, so the feel will be different than you are used to. As was posted before, the best thing to do is go to a music store and try a few of them to see what you like best.
