Ludwig Black Panther

Loading...

This question goes out to the Ludwig experts. I just purchased a beautiful black panther kit and would like to know a little more about it. There seems to be several different kinds of Ludwig models, eg Hollywood, Club Date, etc., and I would like to know which ones came with the black panther finish. I'll try to get some pics, but this kit is in great shape. The wrap looks like it's good for another 40 years. Thanks.

Pictures would help. I'm sure Ludwig Dude will be here soon. But we really can't tell anything until sizes and pictures.

You called that one Drumbum....LOL.....The most common sets that were finished in Black Panther were the Hollywood configuration with the superclassic next. I once saw a clubdate in Black Panther, but alas it was not for sale. Mitch Mitchell had a double bass kit in Black Panther around 1969. And the rarest I have seen was a Jazzette kit that I owned, but unfortunately parted with. Still looking for it, as I'd love to get it back.

You could order the finish on any kit, so its not like it was available on just one configuration. One of the members recently posted a "Bonham" replica kit in green sparkle, and from what I understand, the 26" bass drum was originally Black Panther as well. I wish I had caught that one before the drum was re-wrapped....I've been looking for a 26" kick in Black Panther for years!

Do a search for Black Panther in the forums, I posted a history thread some time back.

My 1971 Black Panther set is what the catalog would call "Rock Duo", only the catalog listed it with a Supraphonic snare, and mine came with a Super Sensitive.

5x14" Super Sensitve snare

8x12" and 9x13" toms

16x16" floor tom

2-14x20" virgin bass drums

I bought this set back in 1987, used. To this day the chrome on all the lugs still has almost zero pitting. It also came with some vintage Zildjian A. cymbals: 21" ride, 20" crash/ride, 14" New Beat hi-hats and a Paiste Stanople 18" crash. All the vintage hardware including two Speedking pedals, as well as 5 soft cases for all the toms and bass drums. Total cost? $320.

I'm always looking for more add on toms and such for it. I want it to grow into the largest Black Panther monster ever, since I grew up on the '80s rock and I'm all about massive drum sets. It just keeps happening that I usually hear about Black Panther sales too late or individual drums will pop up right when I have zero spending money. *sigh* I always will keep searching....

It's good to have goals. I might suggest you also watch commercial vintage dealers. They usually have a healthy stock of singles. You might get lucky and nab a bp tom or two.

Where might I find info on various commercial vintage dealers? I've tried some internet searching, but haven't located many dealers online.

Thanks for the links, guys. Nothing there yet, but gives me new places to keep checking back with. fishwalz, I couldn't find any "used" section on your friend's stores website. I'm not a full vintage collector like most of the board members here are, it just happens that I own a 38 year old drum set that I love very much. I do appreciate you true collectors helping me out. :)

I do own one drum I'm sure is extremely rare....a 10x14" snare shell in Black Panther wrap (3-ply clear interior) I picked up off Ebay a year ago. Drilled for 16 small classic lugs, P-85 snare mechanism. I haven't built it up yet (though I have all the hardware) because the bottom edge is torn up a bit, almost like someone did a home job of trying to cut deeper snare beds into it and did a bad job of it. I just haven't made it over to the nearest drum store yet (an hour away) to have them re-do the bearing edge. They'll most likely have to cut 1/2-1" off the bottom edge to make it flat again. But I'm sure it'll be rockin' once it's completed. ;)

Cool! Don't see many marching snares in Black Panther......I'm still looking for a regular snare in Black Panther myself....found a 6x15" concert snare once but was seriously outbid......still on the hunt though...
