60's Round Badge Gretsch Kit

Loading...

Vintage 1964 (?) Silver Sparkle Gretsch Round Badge Drum Kit. I am the second owner of this Gretsch Kit and have owned them since the early 1970's.

The Kit includes the following: 1) 12"x8" Rack Tom, model #4415, (missing serial # sticker) silver interior shell, 2) 13"x9" Rack Tom model #4416, serial # 21018, silver interior shell, 3) 16"x16" Floor Tom, model #4418, serial #82969, silver interior shell & 4) a rare 24"x14" Bass Drum, (missing the model and serial #).

All Drums have the original round brass Gretsch Badge and all Toms have the silver interiors.

Imperfections include the following: 1) the Bass Drum & Floor Tom have some writing made w/magic marker on the inside shells, 2) the Bass Drum & Floor Tom both have some minor deterioration and separation at the seams, 3) the Rack Toms were drilled to fit Tama hardware thus the four holes showing are from the original Gretsch hardware, (which are no longer in my possession however I am in the process of attempting to restore these to the original mounting hardware). This kit's Bass Drum was never fitted to hold the rack toms. 4) the Bass Drum's wooden rims, (black), are not original, (originals, {black & silver}, were warped and thus replaced), 5) the muffler for the Bass Drum is missing although original hardware is still installed, 6) the 12" Rack Tom is missing the knob for the bottom muffler, (remaining original hardware is installed, attempting to obtain an original replacement knob) and 7) one of the wing nuts for the Floor Tom legs was stripped thus this was tapped and replaced with a larger nut.

What do you think this is worth? I know decent, not perfect, sets of this quality or less, usually with only 1 tom & smaller bass drum, (without the extra holes), are listed on ebay for anywhere from $2200 to $3500. Near Perfect sets are listed at $5000 to $7000. Of course this doesn't mean they are selling for that much. I know my set is not perfect but it is in pretty good shape considering they are over 45 years old. I have kept them in cases and they have been pampered. I have tons of other pics but couldn't load anymore here. What do you think?

Good looking set, looks to be in great shape! I'd say that you could probably pull in close to 2 grand for it, but I'm not sure about that kick drum. I can't recall seeing many virgin 24" round badges around, could be a rare one.

the thing about gretsch collectors and players most are jazzers and they want small size bass drums, who ever added the other mounts should be tar and feathered, that will really hurt the resale value, not being original is a big deal, you may do better selling the kit in pieces, the bass drum is your money drum, together it may bring $1200.00-$1500.00 that would be on a good day, good luck ,mark

Mark,

unfortunately I am the one who took off the original Gretsch mounting hardware and replaced with the Tama. At the time, I had a matching 24" silver sparkle Slingerland Bass drum and the rack toms were in the middle. The Gretsch Stand that held the toms was so flimsy and barely reached the tom of the bass drums so I went out and bought a heavy duty Tama stand and changed the hardware on the toms. I unfortunately threw away the original Gretsch hardware. I am in contact with someone who has the orignal hardware and may restore the Toms. Would this be worth doing so? If so, how much would that add to a potential selling price?

thanks for your opinion,

Frank

Hmmm....I've been checking out Gretsch stuff of late and while I agree that the smaller sizes seem to have the bigger demand, and accordingly price, I think that this estimate is a little on the low side, even with the incorrect hardware and minor issues such as missing knobs/mufflers, incorrect hoops on the bass, etc. I'd say its closer to $1800-$2100 for this kit, even though they are the larger "rock" sizes that aren't as in-demand as the smaller "jazz" sizes. Other than a few easily obtainable missing pieces and 4 extra holes (that would be covered my an original style tom mount when restored back to original specs) I don't see a lot wrong with this kit to make it worth less than $1800.

Hi, Frank, Yeah I Understand What You Mean About The Gretsch Mounts For Gretsch Haveing And Being So Sought After There Mounting Hardware Is Junk!!! I Am Comeing From The Point Of Having Owned 5 Gretsch Kits, My Current One Is A 40's Broadkaster Kit With Rocket Lugs, Gretsch Players And Collectors Are A Finicky Bunch, And Original Is Everything, The Extra Holes Are A Big Deal To Them !!! The Drums Are Beautiful!!! But Truely, Even Repaired A Gretsch Guy Will Spot It A Mile Away, I Still Stand By My Original Estimate, The Bass Drum If It Was A 18" Or 20" You Would Pull Down A Better Price, Personally Myself I Like Big Drums, But I Ain't No Jazzer, That Is Who Will Be Lokking At This Type Kit, I Still Love Your Kit Hey $1500.00 Ain't Bad, Mark

Actually the 4 extra holes are for the original Gretsch plates, the Tama hardware only required 2 holes which fell in the center of the Gretsch plate, (would be concealed if restored), so there is really only 2 extra holes each tom. I had this kit on ebay for a starting bid of $1749 with a buy it now price of $2199 so I guess I was in line with some people's estimate, (not outlandish). I am thinking of purchasing the original plates, missing knob, another fl tom leg mount & bass drum muffler, about $100 investment, do you think this would be worthwhile? If so, how would that effect the value of the kit?
