Hi kjklives2ride, oxalic acid is freely available in the UK. Got mine on eBay actually. Comes as a powder and 2oz to the gallon seems to be a good dilution. I kept mine in a plastic bin down the bottom of the garden (open air). You don't want to go breathing in any fumes or taking a bath in it, but wearing glasses and rubber gloves you should be OK. Should be treated with respect. It doesn't repair the chrome but it does digest rust. Many things can be left overnight and if that isn't enough just put it in again. Rinse in water after and dry then put something on to protect from moisture after.

From what I understand oxalic acid is not so freely available in the US. I understand that you guys have to look for a product that contains oxalic acid and this appears to be for removing rust from boats.

Whichever meathod you choose DO NOT USE STEELWOOL! of any grade as it does indeed leave either scratches or worse a haze on the chrome never ever touch chrome with steel wool ,i like and use the elbow grease with a good chrome polish takes longer but looks and lasts better..

Ah just saw your other post.

Yes, I got this very rare but very rust English Rogers Blue Ripple sparkle

and chucked everything in the bin

Some of it came out well and some like top right were just too far gone. It took the rust off but there was nothing left underneath.

Reused some parts and took some off another set. Only finished the bass so far.

I was wondering, if you used steel wool or foil and lightly scratched the chrome, why can't you just buff the scratches out with a wheel and compound? I never tried it but it seem as though it would work.

I use Turtle Wax Rubbing compound and elbow grease. I have many sets of fantastic looking and very shiny lugs to show for it. And it does leave a protective coat as well.
