Identifying stripped Rogers Holiday set

Loading...

Newbie here. Yesterday I inherited (literally) a quite old Rogers set. The snare (metal DynaSonic) I've dated to '64. But I'll be darned if I can figure out where the kick, tom and floor come from. They each have a sticker inside listing as Holiday, with numbers like 52779 and 52005... which I'm not clear if they mean serial numbers or model numbers. Regardless, my *real* question is about the finish. I see no records online about a natural lacquer that looks anything like these. Does anyone know if this is an oddball original, or are we talking about someone stripping the pearl off? Given the history of the person who owned this set, I'm assuming the drums are same vintage as the snare. Thanks!!!

Most likely a stripped kit as you suspected. Thus no script Rogers badges are seen. 52xxx serials likely in the 64 65 time period. Although Rogers did make the Wildwood finish in natural, it was a little later in the 60s.

Not Wildwood veneer. What city is on the labels? Cleveland or Dayton?

The bass mount has been change.

Cleveland drums until about 1966 I think. Holiday model until 62-63, then Powertone. Mount is likely Ludwig, added later? Check Google for Rogers mounts. With a single mounted tom, it originally was posted on the other mount with a single tom arm used.

Check Vintage Drum Identification drop down menu for more info.

Thanks - that's very interesting. When I arrived where the set was stored, I noticed that center mount - which was unused. The mounted tom was mounted on the hex rod that is adjacent to that center round-hole-mount (the sister to the cymbal mount). 'Really appreciate your insight.

Welcome to VDF.

I concur with the others:

Wrap stripped off.

Ludwig double tom mount.

The refinish of the wood appears to be nicely done. A very nice drum set.

You don’t say anything about other peripheral items needed to complete the set (hardware, cymbals). Did those items come with the set? If so, we would like to see those, too.

Thanks Josh, and yes - there was a Sonar hi-hat stand ("made in Western Germany"), the legs for the floor tom, the bracket for the cymbal and mounted tom, a Ludwig Speed King pedal, and a fairly gnarly snare stand (the only piece in ratty shape). And then a 22" Zildjian (stamp appears to be early 60's) and two Atlas ("made in Italy") hi-hat cymbals. I polished all three quite a bit as they were extremely dirty.

Those numbers date them to 65 or very early 66

which would be pre CBS purchase which happened in April of 66 if the tags read Cleveland.

These drums were built in Covington Ohio

It is a "Swingtime" outfit that has a non Rogers center mount added.

yes they have been stripped of their pearl.

Bass drum hoops are not original

I'd like to see the tags if possible.
