Rogers Dating Guide

Has anyone updated the Rogers dating guide? The most recent guide I have is from around the year 2000 with the research having been done by Kelly Smith in the 805 area code (CA) and was apparently published in the Rogers book by Rob Cook.

In particular is shows 1965 and 1966 drum both having serial numbers in the 52xxx-59xxx range. I'm thinking that someone may have adjusted that by now.

The short answer is no. 50k numbers being interpreted in 1965, 60k into 66. Dayton numbers starting in the 60k ranges, later in 66. Flat gray period extending into 67. Actual move of production to Dayton in68.

Dan,

I've been updating my copy of the guide as I see examples of Cleveland and Dayton labels posted here and on eBay just to get more specific on the 66/67 transitional period. Highest 1966 Cleveland Holiday number I've seen is 61846 (still looking for the lowest 1967 Dayton Holiday number).

Highest 1967 gray interior I've seen is Dayton Holiday 83883 with #88308 having the speckled interior.

From 1975 with the end of the 9/72 era, the guide is worthless.

Of course. That's why we all use your 1975-1984 guide! (The definitive Big R dating guide). We Rogers guys can't thank you enough for all the research you put into that.

Thanks Mike. I have a speckled Dayton bass at 87318 with the kit in the attached photo. The toms are:

8x12 - 91788

16x16 - 88076

As to the later big R drums, I don't think I've owned any yet.

Thanks Dan! Your Dayton Holiday 87318 is now the lowest serial number with a speckled interior I've recorded. I've got the transition from B&B to Beavertails narrowed down pretty close. Still working on exactly when the twisted Dyna snare gates transitioned to the folded. I do all this just to know if a drum being offered for sale actually has all the right hardware or has been retrofitted with wrong period hardware.

Hi Mike,

Updating this thread on the various Rogers transitions. Red Onyx 14x14 floor Tom is on eBay right now (28DEC22) with flat gray interior and Dayton serial number 85075. It was mine up to a couple weeks ago. I sold it with bass and tom that were both Dayton speckled interiors. Buyer is reselling.

Dayton 62679 is my lowest flat gray drum, which is a 14x20 in red onyx finish.

That number fits right in to the Dayton tagged Covington built drums numbers and puts the drum in 1967.

Assembly did not move to Dayton until the summer of 1968 where the interiors changed from the flat grey lacquer to the zolatone (speckled) interiors.

From around April of 66 to the summer of 68 tags will read Dayton but were built in Covington and will have flat grey lacquer.
