What are "closed" mics?

Do you mean "close"?

Gotta tell you, I love the choice of snares. You put a very dry and crisp snare with toms that are deep and resonant. Good going. Very nice contrast. If you are serious about a trade...I'll PM ya.

sounds pretty good!

I would maybe back the floor tom mic back about 6" or just raise is about 8-10" higher than where it is now.

Is that a TEAC you are recording with?

when you say vintage drum mics do you mean, vintage mics? or mics for recording vintage drums?

Either way there are the usual candidates and 9 times out of 10 if you use these guys well in a good room you can get pretty much any sound you like. namely:

- Akg c414 matched pair (i like for overheads)

- shure sm 57/beta 57

- Akg D112

- Sennheiser md 421/md 441 u (great tom mics - esp the 441 on the floor tom)

IMO it all comes down to how you use them. If you are going for a vintage sound you have to open things up, be willing to lose a bit of control and get some great room mics in a good space. if you close mic vintage drums you will lose the inherent shell warmth and fatness a bit.

like all things its mostly knowing how to use your equip to get your desired results

Here's what I use:

Beyerdynamic M380 on the Kick

Beyerdynamic M160 overhead (M/S stereo w/M130 or as mono)

Beyerdynamic M130 Overhead (stereo only)

If I'm close-mic'ing I will use CAD-m149s in a cardioid on the toms and a Audio Technica 4033 or a Beyer M201 on the snare.

The CADs and the ATM are not vintage so if you wanted to go that route try AKG 414s on the toms.

I don't like dynamic mics on the toms much... mostly because of the way they make the cymbals sound through bleed and the lack of transients on the heads.
