Here's a tip that I have found to be very successful. In my opinion, the asking price should include the shipping to the buyer's address. I always took an average shipping price to places in the lower 48 states and noted that other destinations were open to discussion. Also included in the listing is the offer of a significant discount if the buyer comes to pick up the items. I have offered to sell a drum set for $950 which includes ground shipping. Or, if the buyer picks it up, the drums will cost him $800.

In my opinion, shipping is just a fact of life, always has been..And it, like everything else has become outrageous..Want something free, get it from the US Government..LOL

I have sold quite a few things on the Internet over the years..I cannot ship stuff for free..I always figure two things, if shipping is too high..Do not buy, easy..If shipping is stated..You have to work that into your final price you are willing to pay..

I get pretty upset when people complain about shipping, especially after the fact and they have bought the item..There was no secret what shipping and the amount it is was going to be..Actual shipping is just not just the only cost the seller incurs, it also includes time, packing expenses/supplies, and a usually a trip to the shipper..That also takes time and fuel..

Shipping costs have skyrocketed too..I cannot tell you how many times I have lost my butt on shipping..But they still complain..LOL

Yes if it makes people feel better to get free shipping, offer it..But in alot of those 'Free Shipping" cases, it is added into the price if it is offered..But that does make the buyer feel he got a deal..

It's been a while since I have bought or sold drums from an online seller or buyer. But, using Greyhound buses for shipping the drums was much more reasonably priced and quicker than the usual ground freight by truck.

Shipping has skyrocketed in the past few years! As to the eBay offering, the shipping price of $200 is more than reasonable. I sold a 1968 Slingerland BR80N set, with the complete hardware pack, about 4-5 years ago. I managed to get it all properly packaged up in 4 boxes. The shipping cost to the East cost was around $250 via UPS Ground. Today, it would probably be around $400.

More to the point of the eBay offering; if I were seriously interested in the set, I'd start a communication with the seller and see if we can meet at a fair price. Another thing to consider is that the majority of us really don't want the cymbals. That, plus I'd only want hardware that is correct for the set, not aftermarket add-ons. That could also be used to negotiate a better price. However, it also takes the seller to want to do this. So many sellers want to sell everything as a complete package, take it or leave it!

I just went back and read the text. It's obvious that the seller has a personal attachment to the set, which he feels justified in charging more. That's the first mistake we should never make! Next, the addition of the Slingerland tom and Set-O-Matic double tom holder decreases the value. This was originally a Headliner outfit, which was very popular. Had he left it as-is, I'd put a fair market value of maybe $1500-$1750 to start. All we can do is see what happens when the set doesn't sell for his asking price. Everyone is free to set whatever price they want, but when the item never sells, you have to ask yourself if it's overpriced and seek out someone who can offer guidance with pricing.
