Gretsch, what do you think I’ve got here?

Loading...

Walk into music go round and I see a “No name vintage kit” $149.99. rims mounts, pearl spurs, and Tom arms. Looks like a Gretsch. Diamond floortom leg brackets, die cast hoops, 5 lug 12” tom 14x14 floortom, 14x20 bass drum and a bonus 10” concert tom.

I immediately noticed the concert tom was a Yamaha by the lugs and diagonal cuts in the plys.

Looks like they put filler in the tone control holes top and bottom on the Toms, and on the Pratt bass muffle holes.

Looks like it was originally a consolette, with a Diamond plate on the tom, telescoping spurs on the bass (that they didn’t bother filling) and a bass mount cymbal holder.

I can even see what looks like the holes where the tack held on the round badges, with a breather hole in the bass drum.

Bearing edges are the usual Gretsch backward type on the Tom’s but not the bass drum. Looks like 6 plys. And a really bad fade on what may have been a rosewood stain. Heads fit too tight to have been a wrap that was removed and refinished.

What’s really throwing me is the clear interiors.

Any ideas on what era this set is from?

"the usual Gretsch backward type on the Tom’s but not the bass drum."

~

that's how G are bass and snare had their own edge; Toms (incl floor toms) had their own edge) 2 edges in a set is the Gretsch way)

but any way don't know what you have there- have to see screw heads a little closer- flat screwdriver or hex head - in each drum etc

Whatever you have there, it was a bargain for $149. Whenever I go to MGR everything is overpriced.

So the screws are 6 point head, some are the split lock washer and others are the Star type. The bass drum had all kinds of mix match screws and washers

All the screws were mixed up. I have two different lengths as well.

I would imagine the long ones for the bass drum and the shorter for the toms.

Don’t know why the two different lock washers….

Whatever they are, those drums are crying out for an auto paint shop to give them a high gloss paint job like piano black.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

So around what year did they use the six point (hexagonal) screws?

I think that identifying a used drum set by the tension rods, screws, washers, bolts, and nuts used to attach the lugs and other parts is not very reliable way to identify the drums because very few old drums still have all of the original small parts.

From clubdate64

So around what year did they use the six point (hexagonal) screws?

late 67 into 68; they were still/ coming from/ New York.

That one faded floor tom sure looks externally- like an Arkansas era drum- but you say it has no vent hole/ for a SSign/ badge etc.

Looks like a faded Arkansas

````
Inside shine of that small tom/ the grain? doesn't look familiar at al But..
Need really good pictures
But who knows tune em up and start playing them :)
Better pictures/ straight/ close up of interiors/
