Out of round metal shell

Hello, I have a 60s keystone badge Supraphonic with a slightly out of round shell and I'm wondering if anyone out there has had any success in getting a Supra, or any other type of metal shell snare drum back in round?

A drum head will sit on the top bearing edge and will spin freely on the bearing edge, but on the reso side I have to jam the head on. It seems like perhaps the drum was dropped on a lug or something.

Any success stories out there on getting out of round metal shells back in round?

Cheers.

This is always a tough nut to crack.

Brass shells can be manipulated to some in degree by hand, but steel or aluminum shells aren't as flexible.

My best guess here would be to locate a machine shop that has a rolling machine with a pin that would fit between the center bead of the shell and the lip. It might screw up the finish or chrome work though.

Thanks for the reply, kdg. I had thought of this too, but I'll probably just jam the reso head back on and pretend it's OK. I took the whole drum apart. Here's the shell. Chrome looks good. It should look good after a serious cleaning.

Another Idea would be to contact Remo and special order a "classic fit" reso head, so that there would be more clearance.

I would measure the diam of the shell to find its widest point. Then, I would protect the shell with some padding, and put 3 bricks on top of the widest part for a few days. Then take off and see if the shell is back, or close to back in the round.

I like the idea. It makes sense. I'm a little hesitant to do anything with it. I was once able to get an egg shaped aluminum shell back in round, but it wasn't a beaded shell and it came at a cost. The brushed aluminum finished got scratched up really bad, but the shell was perfectly round in the end. I have this metal band thing, not too unlike a 14" drum hoop. I just passed the warped shell through the hoop and it straightened right out. I really had to hammer the hoop over the shell using a chisel like tool and a mallet. In the end the shell looked wrecked, but it was perfectly in round. I wouldn't attempt it on the Supra, especially given that the shell looks really great with no flakey chrome, so, I think I'll just pretend that I never saw the out of round reso side. :)

Yeah. Cool looking set. I sold it a couple of weeks back. Only after I sold it I found a floor tom for sale. It wasn't an exact match, but close enough. Doh! Oh well, easy come, easy go.

Here's that Supra..
