Was your Jazzette originally wrapped? Or, was it a natural, wood finish? Just so you know, any alteration of your Jazzette will greatly reduce its value if you ever decide to sell it later on down the road. The Jazzette is typically at the upper end of valuable and collectible Ludwig drum sets -the more complete and original, the better.

Would it be possible for you to post some pictures of your Jazzette?

I'm sure someone else will chime in on this soon, but in the meantime, I'm certain there is someone in your area who can do the work, properly. Maybe try Googling "drum restoration" in the San Francisco area.

Originally the Jazzette had a brownish lacquer on it. That became so scraped from use (I had a lot of gigs in New England in HS and college) so I stripped it and refinished it with a clear coat and enjoyed the natural wood for years. More recently I tried to stain it darker as kind of a hat tip to the original - but made a hash of that. Then I decided to just wrap it to make it usable and modestly presentable. I must have gone to fast at some point on the bass drum and it bubbled up. I'm not so concerned about the resale value. It's mostly just sentamental as a gift from my now passed dad. And I have a lot of memories of music theater gigs, jazz gigs. Maybe I'll have the wife bury it with me. :-)

I know there are many, MANY drum refinishers and restorers out there. I'm certain that, in a metropolitan area such as San Francisco, there will be plenty of people who are equipped to do the job for you.

The forum can be a little slow at times so please check back often to see if someone in your area may chime in with a name or two for you to consider.

One name that just entered my mind is Precision Drum Company. Not sure where they are, though.

Precision Drum Company does EXCELLENT work! .. but .. they are in New York. It “might” be prohibitive based on the shipping costs coast to coast. Absolutely worth looking into though. No disappointments on their quality workmanship!
