Ludwig Black Beauty 19??

Loading...

Hello All,

Great forum and website. I am not a drum collector and I am not even a drummer. I was given an old snare drum back in the 1960s from a family friend and have had it in my garage ever since. I just recently pulled it out and started to clean it up. The hardware is all off it and is very green (so I think it is copper (???)). I beleive all the parts are there, but I don't have the time or expertise to put it all togther. It has a Ludwig Chicago engraving on it, but no date or serial number. From the little bit of research on this site and a few others, it appears to be a Black Beauty. It has the "flowers" engraved on it.

My questions is is this drum worth anything to a collector? If so, how would I determine what year it is and how much it might be worth.

I apologize if I have asked some dumb questions on this post, but I really don't know anything about drums.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

On the badge is a serial number, please post it and some pictures and we cn help determine. In it's current "stste", it will be worth less than if you had left it alone, but we shall see. I will make an offer if you'd send me some pix to my email. PM will be coming your way.

Don't clean anything until you have spoken to Mike Curroto, who is a member of this forum. He is the foremost expert on your drum, if it truly is a Black Beauth. Don't sell anything yet, that drum can easily start at $1000.00 and higher, regardless of how clean it is.

Does it look like this?

Measurements are helpful as well as pics. Hang on to it, then decide what's best after talking to an expert.

Thanks all for your responses.

I will try to post pix later today.

Backbeatkeeper - it does look very similar to the picture (link) that you posted, however the engraving on mine looks more like flowers, but other than that, it does look very similar.

Thanks for all your help, I'll post later today.

Wow, that's quite a drum! Definitely what we today refer to as a Black Beauty. Mike Curotto will know more, but I believe your drum is a 1926-1929 Super Ludwig, with the 12-leaf floral engraving. Similar drums have been selling in the $1500 - $2500 range.

Nice drum SteveMac, wish I had as nice of friends as you do. Take good care of her, or sell her to someone that will.
