Cozy was one of my favourite drummers growing up - a far better technician than he's ever given credit for. Most people remember him for his explosive stage shows and solos but he could also play with amazing feel and subtlety. I saw him several times in the 70s and 80s and his playing was second to none. He is frequently cited by other top rock drummers as a key influence so I've often wondered why there has never been a biography about his life?
Cozy Powell
1920s 14"x5" Ludwig Super Sensitive Dual Snare
1957 6 1/2" x15" Slingerland WMP Concert King
1938 8"x15" Leedy Broadway Standard
1947-53 14x6.5" NOB Ludwig & Ludwig Universal
...plus a bunch of mismatched Slingerlands that collectively make a pleasing noise.
Agree Gerard- when I was a young lad my very religious Mother brought home a 45 record and said- "I thought you'd like this- I heard it on the radio and went to the 5 and Dime to buy it for you".... it was Dance with the Devil..... Love my Ma! Cozy was ahead of his time- theatrical yet solid... I'd love to see a bio....
I don't think this is out yet although it's been in the works for a while. IMDB says it's in post-production. It's called "Dance With the Devil."

When Carl Palmer was doing Asia we saw ELP (Emerson Lake and Powell) at the Oakland Auditorium.
Emerson Lake and Palmer probably would have played the Oakland Coliseum, I got to see this incarnation with Cozy Powell in a smaller, (more cozy) environment.

Wow! isn't this forum great! I can't believe that there's going to be a film about him. That's incredible. He was such a great talent and gone waaaay too soon. I know that bassist Neil Murray who played with Cozy in Whitesnake, MSG, Brian May, and many other groups still keeps his memory alive.

Sixteenth century greensleeves live made me an instant Cozy fan way back when.
Great drummer and yes both powerful and subtle as called for. ie great dynamics!

Cozy. Only fam with his Schenker and Rainbow stuff, but always dug his playing. RIP

Cozy was happy to have a last name beginning with a "P" .. what luck!
I worked for a promoter in the 80’s and drove Cozy from the hotel to the venue when ELP was in town. I also got to shoot pictures of the show. You can see my pics at the link below.
