Staining and/or sealing stripped drum shells

Thin shell's assessment is spot on from what I've experienced. A wrap that has been glued properly to a mahogany outer ply is real hard to remove without taking some of the mahogany with it.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I have this cheap 5 pc. kit I was planning on staining and glossy sealing different colors to be a jelly bean kit. Really only doing 4 drums and using a metal snare. Red, yellow, green and purple. Plus I was thinking of making them concert toms also. The stain and sealant seems a little costly and I may just vinyl fabric wrap it but not as jelly bean kit if I wrap it.

Olimpass, may I suggest you use the same idea I did with the tie-dye kit I did a few years back. you can find my step by step guide in the restoration section of this forum. it cost me under 100$ to do that kit. look up my thread, it is on pg 2 of Restoring vintage drums section, titled "tie dye kit in the makings. if you have any questions please feel free to ask. just a thought.

not saying do tie dye, you can get any pattern/color you want from the site I got the material from.

Thanks Robyn. I’ve checked it out and the tie dye kit was cool. I have experience wrapping with fabric and also tried a stain polyurethane in one shot type of finish. I saw this video about using a natural wood stain in a cup and add some oil based or water based paint to stir on to make your color that seems fairly easy.
