Ludwig & Ludwig Top Hat snare... 80 years later

Loading...

The original Ludwig and Ludwig “Top Hat” model was a very limited-edition drum set initially made between 1940 and 1942. It was the absolute top of the line drum set available at the time and is considered by many collectors to be one of the rarest and most sought-after production drums made. Over time it has taken on the nickname of the “Top Hat and Cane” model.

Due to the extremely limited supply of materials during early World War 2, only a very small number of the sets were made in 1941 and then discontinued by 1942. The Top Hat model was never offered in any subsequent Ludwig catalogs; however, a small number of the sets have appeared that were date stamped 1946.

For Ludwig’s 90th Anniversary the company produced 90 Limited Edition Top Hat and Cane Snare drums.

As we are now ~80 years since the production of the original Top Hat model, I thought I’d share some pictures of my snare. No date stamp on the interior but it is in excellent condition with very minor yellowing. My 90th anniversary edition is # 28 of 90.

I hope you enjoy!

Michael

Cool! I always wondered why the "pair" of gloves are both right-handed!

One of the best sounding snares I've played. Even when using the original snare wires.

Nope. They are definitely both right-handed gloves. You can see the thumbs.

Then all I can think of next is some kind of message, like ...."Two right, second hand, nothing left. But that don't mean anything.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Great post, beautiful drums, both of them. I got a kick out seeing that the Top Hat wrap was a whopping $17 extra versus "plain white pearl". But when you think of it, $332 must have been a lot of dough back then. Online inflation checker says $6133!!! Well, maybe the new Covington sets are worth $4k.
