Nice looking kit. I thought the LaBoz badge was enormous, but those Crown badges cannot be missed!

Dan yes indeed these particular Crown badges used by Hoshino Kougyou are a thing where you either love them or you hate them They are one of my personal favorites.

"Crown" was used by a few different builders and each had a few different designs

this is a seller's pic of a kit built by Sakae the "Crown" badges on it are much more normal looking.

The fellow Neil who sold and shipped these drums to me was from South Korea but he lived in Edmonton Alberta Canada

Anyway Neil liked my drum display so much he took the Kijiji ad for his drums down and refused a few local offers, packed and arranged for shipping to me here in Rhode Island

(he did the absolute worst job packing the kit that you could possibly imagine)

But amazingly in spite of that, the drums arrived, all in good order .

Neil did all that, without collecting a single dime from me beforehand.

Of course I paid him promptly and gave him a gentle lecture

on always securing payment before he sends anything off to some buyer in the future.

But it was all because he was just a super nice guy and liked my MIJ drum display

That is one nice guy!

I'm thinking you may have the largest collection of MIJ drums in the world, or at least the largest collection in one warehouse. He was probably totally amazed when he saw your display. It's a veritable museum and your effort collecting all the information on these drums, makers, badges, etc. is making you into quite a curator as well.

When you retire from it all, you might want to consider selling out to a Japanese collector who is willing to do a container load shipment. Whenever I see vintage drums for sale that are in Japan, the prices are off the Richter scale.

not sure we could measure up to any world status

but the current display has to be one of the larger in the New England area

all one needs is luck with a huge cheap space a little disposable income

and to be totally insane. ummmm errrrrr ...I mean , have a fondness for drums and nostalgia.

I thought I should mention that the display was very small at my old shop (1st. pic)

That second picture is just fantastic! I'm going to print it out and show it to my wife. I can say something like, "It could be way worse my dear."

I think I peaked at around 25 Rogers kits in the mid-90's. She was working and had her own gallery back then and wasn't paying much attention. I had a good paying side job doing some ACAD and would divert a bit of the proceeds regularly. Worked out nicely. A full 4-piece 20, 12, 14 and PowerTone in top condition might have run a max of $900 at the time. It's been down hill ever since. All the way down to one last year. Ah, the memories of it all.

I did pick up a few this year. The prices have been pretty flat because of the covid thing.

My latest score that I’ve cleaned up. A Pearl fiberglass kit. Not certain what year it is.,1980 something? It didn’t have the tom arms. It also doesn’t have the bass drum spur rubber tips. They’re a big size that I can’t seem to find yet. I’ll set it up once I get those.

Most recent purchase. A 12,13,14,16,20” gold wrapped mij. Badges were taken off. Not sure what it was but obviously Pearl made. Luan shells.

The missing badges could be due to "badge embarassment" or "ugly badge removal syndrome". I think I removed the rather large LaBoz badges from my original drum set for both reasons. I surely wanted the "real thing" American made kit at the time I got them, but they were also very large and looked kind of silly. Now we rather like it as being a funky thing of the era. Of course, anyone who knew anything about drums at the time would not have been fooled by my attempt to disguise them.

I do notice that Pearl only used 12 lugs on the bass drum. I wonder if that was to economize for loss of profit selling off to a second party seller like Sears or Montgomery Ward.
