Please help me identify a Ludwig 6.5x14 Black Beauty

Loading...

Hi,

I just came across a quite mint Ludwig Black Beauty Snare in 6.5x14, Supraphonic version (meaning not the Supersensitive model), of course imperial lugs plus the internal muffler.

I would think it’s a vintage one, but I‘m curious about the exact age and approximate value.

It’s equipped with a blue/olive pointy badge and a 7-digit serial (215XXXX).

Any leads would be appreciated very much! :)

Great drum either way. Is the finish black or chrome? My eyes may be playing tricks on me.

I thought the same thing...It looked like chrome at first...but now, it could be black!

Thanks, bought it - it seems to be from late 79, 80 or even 81.

Ok then, what did you pay? I'll guess $700.

According to Richard E. Gier's authoritative book "Serial Number Based Dating Guides for Vintage Ludwig Drums," that serial number is most likely of 1981 vintage.

Never heard of this book and wasn't able to find anything googling it as well - is this legit or a joke? :)

Thanks for the info though!

Mr. Gier is a statistician, and currently is THE word on serial numbers!

I recommend his book.
