I like to pick up this matter once again. From another forum I know, that my Star shells are a mix of Birch and Lauan shells.

And besides some of the early Tama's 'Perfect Percussion' drum kits, this shell construction never appeared again at Tama.

Has anyone a clue, who might have been the manufacturer behind these late Star/ early Tama drum shells?

Was it Keller shells in USA (or did they manufacture Maple shells only)?

Or was it Sakae in Japan?

I really can't believe that Star/ Tama made these heavy and extraordinary excellent drum shells by themselves and stopped doing that without leaving a trace in ANY of their later product lines (by reviving another series with these shells or etc.).

Any ideas (or even better: knowledge) are welcome!

This was discussed at length over at dfo a while back. The shells are Luan with a birch interior ply. You can clearly see the luan outer ply peaking out at the edge of the wrap. The rings are made from off cuts of the shell with a cut and joint in the ring so it could be fitted inside the shell. So the rings are the same makeup.

I am trying to find out WHO manufactured these extraordinary drum shells ... :)

As I have my doubts that Star tried it - and didn't proceed with them in any of their further series lateron.

These current Bubinga Star shells looks very similar, albeit with much higher quality woods.
