What a performance and a great drum sound. Loved the relatively high tuning on the ride tom. Do you believe how he grabbed that stick from the bass drum without a whisker of missing time. Wow! That's about as good a performance of Buddy Rich's style as I've ever seen.

What is the deal? Did he have a revelation?

Dan!
Yup! I have a personal Dave Weckl story back when he was at the U of B, and it involves my being asked to sub for him! That is absolutely true! The story is an interesting one for sure, and one I have never forgotten to this very day. I had just left Berklee College of Music in Boston to take a road gig with a 10 piece .. yes, 10 piece! .. funk/soul/dance band. Four horns, and the trumpet player was from the U of B, which is how I was recommended. By the way ... back then, this was around 1978, one could play/tour with a band that size and have STEADY WORK as well as good pay! Not so much today of course. Anyway, yes, GREAT STUFF here, and those Slingerland's KILL! 😎

I finally checked out this video and immediately was hoping the Tommyp would weigh in!
I have seen Dave play in decades...and had to remind myself that he is now much older!! I just LOVED watching this video. The drums, and cymbals, sounded fantastic and I watched and listened with a smile on my face!

I saw the stick fly out of his hand and noted how he didn't skip a beat while getting the other stick!!

Exciting history there Tommy.
It's a good thing I didn't get that invitation. I would have had to turn it down. No way I could keep up with that.
Something about the dynamic of his playing is quite unusual. When you watch videos of different star drummers playing with the Buddy Rich band, it's often disappointing. This clip was just downright excellent.
Weckl is an incredible drummer on any drum set. As a younger guy, I wanted to hate him. I think it was that he raised the bar so high, I couldn't see it anymore. And now, at his age, he's in great shape and playing better than ever.
