In 1964 I bought this Oaklawn Camco set when I lived about ten miles from the factory. I gigged with them for about three years. Back then I would get a new drum set about every two years just for the hell of it. I never owned more than one drum set at a time. These drums measured 14x22 bass drum, two 9x13 tom, 14x14 floor tom, 16x16 floor tom, matching Arostocrat snare drum. These drums were the largest set I ever played. I preferred either one up or two up with one down and 14x20 bass drums. Here are a few pictures of that set. White outfit photo was opening for The Animals and Turtles in 1966. On the rickety riser was opening for The Association also in 1966. The color photo and the others were playing for a young adult dances in 1965 of 1966.

OK now I'm missing my Camcos. Sold about 5 years ago to a guy in CA. Then again, I wasn't hugely impressed by the sound...or the wrap for that matter.

Excuse me for asking, but was this The Critters "Mr. Dieingly Sad" band? I love that song and still hear it on various online stations. The Animals, Turtles and Association were hugely successful. The Animals arguably one of the best underrated bands ever. How cool.

larryz...We were the Kritters with a K for a couple of years before that other band had the hit record. We would have fun with that song when we would cover it on a gig. We made certain to let the crowd know that we did not record it. But, Half of our group had a different hit record with our previous band The Exports that we would also play.

Found this one recently while looking through some old photos. I thought I'd posted it at least once, but don't see it in this thread. Might be deep in site content somewhere, but here it is again.

It came to me with very thin satin flame on it. Some cheesy stuff that was torn here and there. Because the Camco lugs don't have a shaft that sits inside the shell for the tension rods, they can migrate a bit if not tightened down very firmly. These had moved and shoved the thin wrap with them. There were bubbles in front of the lugs. A previous owner had stripped the paint from the inside of the shells. Actually a neat and clean job of it, but you could still see some of the white paint in the grain of the wood.

I had it done in merlot. It came out nicely. I think it was Anthony at the Village Drum Shop in RI. At one time I'd had a black Aristocrat with it. That drum had the finest throw-off I've ever experienced. Even though I settled on Rogers over the years, the Swivomatic strainer is not as nice in my view.

Speaking of maybe posting something earlier in this thread, I don't remember if I had posted any pictures of the Camco Tuxedo snare I acquired out of sheer coincidence after wrapping some orphan Leedy drums to make a little bop set. The Camco snare is all original.

The 3 D finish Camco used made for an eye popping look. I've often wondered what it would look like under stage lights.

I finally restored the early Oaklawn (20-12-14) I bought last year and got to use it in the Orchestra for some Gershwin and other pieces.
