Using the date they were bought new. Sometimes the set could have been in the store for 2-3 years before purchased. being this is a 6 ply and 3 ply mix makes it a little dear difficult to pin down whether they were sold together. Sold as a One Nighter type and then a floor tom ordered (and by that time the 6 ply were what was being made etc etc on and on.but never call a 20/12/14 a Name Band : )

Jda

Not difficult to pin down about the 3 and 6ply mix in regards to this set. Gary Pearse bought them new. His daughter sold them to me after he died. It wasn't uncomon during the time of Gretsch transition from 3ply to 6ply shells to have sets of mixed 3 and 6ply go out the door I've been told. Gretsch used what they had on hand. My set is all 3ply except the 6ply 14 floor tom.

It's all good.

Some more points I'd like clear up:

My floor tom has the diamond plate leg supports. Biught new in 1960... if they had been sitting in the store for two or 3 years the floor tom would likely have had the Nodal type supports. I'm thinking yes... my drums may have an earlier date that 60 but I'm guessing probably no earlier than 59... going by the hardware and giving some months to a year or so between the time my drums were shipped from Gretsch to Canada and when Gary Pearse bought them.

They were not pieced together.

I've only ever called them a Name Band set because that information was given to me by an appraiser. For years been a bit suspicious of that because I always see the larger drums within that setup but I didn't really care or question it. Until recently and I decided to post here. I've since had a lot of feedback ....here and elsewhere regarding my question about what model my drums are.

As I've said in above post... I'm pretty certain my drums are closer to the Progressive Jazz model but with the larger snare. Just guessing here but maybe Gary Pearse just wanted a larger snare when he bought them... maybe he didn't care and maybe the retailer swapped it out at the store. I'll never know and I don't really care.

It's all about the drums... they speak for themselves and they're awesome.

Those of us being sarcastic and "snarky" are being good-natured about it. O-Lugs and I have been happily jousting back and forth about the catalog-correct issue for quite a while. I admit that I have had some non-good-nature arguments with other people about drum stuff.

I can see that. Thanks for the entertainment and the wealth of knowledge gained from varied perspectives. BowingBowing

Now, if anyone has any available vintage 1943 drums--catalog-correct or not--please let me know about them.

it could be a Progressive Jazz (minus the Max Roach 4/14 snare)Listed in the "Downbeat Part Two- October 5, 1955""America's Top Drummers Play Gretsch"a catalog supplement that apparently came with a downbeat magazine)did you ever see that catalog? I have it. Shelly Manne and Max Roach pictures are next to the set (Copper Mist)oh. $454. price listed

I've got a Progressive Jazz set (20/12/14) with a matching "Name Band" snare (4157) rather than the "Progressive Jazz" snare (4175) that is shown with the Progressive Jazz set in the 1966 catalogue. Must have been lots of one-offs from the named sets in the catalogue that were shipped and sold as a complete package. Mine are mid-60s six plies.

" Must have been lots of one-offs from the named sets in the catalogue that were shipped and sold as a complete package".

I shopped for my drums at many Chicago area music stores including Frank's Drum Shop and Drums Ltd. in the Chicago Loop. There were many more "one-offs" on display than catalog-correct drum sets. There was also a lot of ordering of drum sets with the component drums selected by the drummer ordering the drum sets. If the drums were in a common color, those two drum shops could often piece the set together from their large inventories. I recall Bill at Drums Ltd. having a display of a Gretsch set comprised of a different color of sparkle for each drum. This was long before the jelly bean sets appeared on the market.

Hmm. Me? "Snarky" haha... I don't think so. Or am I missing something or misinterpreting?

My long replies are only intended to be thorough regarding this thread. I'm appreciating the replies and I'm trying to answer with what I know.

It's a great 'Forum' and I'm happy to contribute.

I don't perceive any snark from Kona. I see a man posting about his drum set with facts about the drum set's provenance. Thanks for standing your ground, Kona. I have enjoyed reading your posts about your catalog-questionable Gretsch drum set.
