Oops! Caught by the Glitter of it All

Well, I haven't done this for quite some time. I had mostly been in the selling or stable mode for several years. However, I have always had an affinity for blue sparkle (color of my first drum set - a '67 MIJ kit).

I've had this basic kit at least a couple of times before. I was tempted by it's general condition, price and the fact that my current kit of the same configuration is BDP. BDP is fine, but I prefer the blue sparkle. So I bit for it and will replace the BDP set-up with this kit.

The seller indicated he got if from the original owner whose parents bought it for him around 1965. Evidently, it got some use and was pretty much stored for the last 50 years. It seems that is not an unusual story.

Given the fact that the floor tom is a speckled Dayton with a typed-over Banner label 5266 and the PowerTone is 16170, I'm thinking there is some memory fade on the part of the original owner because those facts add up to a kit distributed somewhere between late '67 or early '68. The other two are 69xxx, so pretty squarely in '67.

The seller gave me a bit of a break because I didn't need the mix of Ludwig, Rogers and no-name hat stand, pedal, seat and snare stand. I have all I need of that stuff. So it worked out well with the free shipping. I may not keep the PowerTone because I have a nice 7-line Dynasonic and one snare is enough these days.

I won't be able to unpack it for several months because I'm working outside the country for a while, but it should be fun to see it eventually. I will, of course, put the tom and cymbal rods on their correct sides. Clapping Happy2

Nice find!! Blue Glass Glitter/Sparkle is my favorite color. I also have a Citadel that was stored for decades and the only minus is one tiny spot of rash on the BD.

1974-75 Rogers Starlighter IV New England White 13/16/22 (w/Dyna)
1964-67 Rogers Blue Glass Glitter 12/14/16/20
early Oaklawn Camco Blue Moire 12/14/20
1926 Super Ludwig 5x14
1960-ish Ludwig COB 5x14 Super Sensitive
1960-ish Ludwig COB 6.5x14 Super Sensitive
1970 Ludwig COB Cut-Badge 5x14 Supra Phonic

Looking for a Camco Aristocrat SD in Blue Moire!!

Dan that's a great looking kit - enjoy ! I have a similar Cleveland kit I bought way back when from a Mom who wanted to get it out of her closet. The blue glass glitter sparkle looks just killer under stage lighting conditions - I love it.

The Citadel layout if my favorite. Few of us use a bass mounted cymbal arm or rod these days, so you have nice clean bass without unused hardware. Still, using a bass mount does save you from lugging one more stand.

Sweet kit and quite rare. I've seen less than a 1/2 dozen of the kits set up with the rail consolette, folding spurs and sta-tite FT legs. I suspect the mom wanted to get it out of the closet because it was blinding her each time she opened the door.

PS on this kit. The seller sent along photos of the paper labels. To my surprise, the PowerTone is Cleveland with a serial number of 16170. I hadn't paid sufficient attention to the seller's description because he had mentioned that.

That's quite a high serial number for a Cleveland PowerTone. The Rogers Dating Guide fades Cleveland PowerTones at 15xxx. An identical Dayton blue sparkle snare with serial no. 15128 is for sale right now on eBay. Of note is that it has the tapered-head rods while the Cleveland drum has retained the square-head version.

You guys who are keeping track of high and low numbers can add this PowerTone as an anomaly to the guide.

Mr. Boucher that is a beautiful kit, and I love the blue sparkle and logo on bass drum.

Very cool that yours came complete with mount accessories, I am looking for a couple Swivo cymbal arms for my Rogers, and those aren't cheap.

Are those cymbals Zildjians from the same era?

Wow! A Blue Sparkle Rogers Swivo kit! Just gorgeous! That was my dream kit when I was a kid. Always a fan of Rogers blue sparkle and solid black as well.

Hi O-Lugs!

Thanks for the kind words! Yes, it really is an excellent Headliner outfit. The bass drum shows with the newer style of BD claws and tension rods from the Dayton era, but I reinstalled the original claws and tympani handle rods for accuracy. The matching snare drum is a period-correct Tower that I converted to a Powertone with the use of the Swivo strainer and die-cast butt. I had an adapter made to be able to mount the butt to the shell without drilling new holes. It's just a great sounding snare drum!

I have no doubt that Dan's kit will be excellent and we're all looking forward to more pictures!
