RB Gretsch Snare Lightning Throw

Loading...

Lately, it seems like after a few songs—and especially when my snare wires are tensioned a bit more loosely—they continually loosen until they disengage. I don’t think this is normal, and it feels like a newer problem. Any ideas on how to address this?

Thanks!

It would be helpful if you would upload a good photo of the throw off side and butt side of your snare drum, as the model styles varied somewhat by years of manufacture. Also good to know if you're using snare cord or tape to affix your snare wires.

On butt side tie your chord off

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

If your lightning has the righty throw like mine has yes that’s unfortunately common. The small tap screws on throw side get stripped for some reason and loses tension.

As we speak Dana and the boys at Bentleys are repairing my 4160 in that manner.

Do you have any photos depict what you described? How are they fixing it?

No pictures I just told him what my throw was doing and he said he’s look it over.

I had a suspicion but he confirmed when he called me back with the assessment.

It’s really the two screws on the throw that keep loosening and your tie whether it be string or plastic will gradually keep slipping. If you look at it from the side you should see the lever side stressing to one side, as it carries all the tension. That is one of the factors in why Gretsch eventually settled on the middle position lighting throw.

Mine was nowhere near as prominent as your description, I could play fine and kept decent tension, but knew the belt was losing tension so to speak.

My guess is they are either going to tap and die or bore the holes completely and with larger screw diameter.
