I have a 1959 Rogers with 3 ply/RR shell and TB Hoops.
My question is I have read that the Powertone/Tower snares sound much better.
Something to do with the snare beds and the lower rims.
Any truth to this?

My take on it is that "better" is very subjective. I think an Acrolite is "better" sounding than a black beauty. I never liked the sound of a Dynastic snare, but it looks "better" than many snare drums....and so on.
And then you have to ask if calfskin heads sound "better" than synthetic heads, too...what kind of sticks....the room the drums are in.....the player's grip and technique....and so on.
All of those things determine what "better" is...and it's still always just an opinion.

TB hoops were made for calf skin as were the snare beds on the earlier snare. the Powertone has different beds and the rims are closer to the head. I think that would make it more sensitve
OK...Call me un-hip. What the hell are TB and RR hoops? I have payed Rogers since 1961. I have never heard of those acronyms.
How silly of me to not be a slave to abbreviations when it takes so little effort to type tall boy or re-rings (which is already an abbreviation).
I just assumed that TB was for Tall Boy...because it was referenced in association to hoops... and Rogers is the only company that is associated with that term.
And RR was referenced in association to the 3-ply (which makes it wood) shell, so it had to be the abbreviation for re-ring (reinforcement-ring).
The sd with my ds is a wsd and not a msd. They are all made by S'land. The tts and bd are also wsds. The rcs, ccs, and hhcs r made by AZ. Are those enough silly abbreviations for you? I know what they mean. You don't? Too bad.
The snare drum with your drum set is a wood shell drum, not a metal shell drum. They all are made by Slingerland. The tom toms and bass drum are also wood shell drums. The rides, crashes and hi-hats are made by Avedis Zildjian.
No problem
