Do you plan on keeping the kit or re-selling it if you bought it? If you keep it, it is your choice what to do...If you plan to re-sell it, leave that decision of removing the wrap to the buyer...

As idrum4fun states, you should be able to tell by looking down on the bearing edge whether there is another wrap underneath...If there is, I would keep the kit and I wouldn`t remove the BP wrap either...

I do go and looked at the set what a waste of time it was.

The set was a fake set of BP it was a rewraped set after looking at the edges of the 12"Tom I could see Silver sparkle under the BP finish so I checked the other drums the 16"&22" bass was the same then I checked the 13" it was Red sparkle, the shells inside were the right year clean inside ete. But then I looked at the Keystone badges they were fake! Gromments looked off from Ludwig and you could see they were replaced.Iam So PO at the guy that almost came to blows.

It's good that you took the time to determine the authenticity of the drums. If the Black Panther wrap was applied well, and if the drums play well, for the right price could it be a good player's set of drums?

For future reference regarding citrus mod drums. The color was introduced in mid to late 1968 and ran up until about 1972-73. back in those days there of course was no internet or anything like that and the spread between catalogs at that time was 1967(printed in 1966) with 1971(printed in 1970) being the next catalog. Citrus mod is in the 71 catalog but in 1969 during the end of the keystone era, it is my personal thought that 1969 would have been much too early for Ludwig to think about covering over a finish that had not even been out for more than a year or so. From what I have seen citrus mod started getting covered with black panther sometime in 1970. Trends were changing fast and I think Ludwig knew they were sitting on a dud. Because lots of shells were pre made up with the color, Ludwig just decided to use a thin finish to solve the problem. I had always assumed it was black panther as that is what I have seen but last year someone posted a standard series 14x14 in one of the astro finishes that was covered over. I have not ever seen anything but citrus mod get covered over but I also love to be proven wrong and maybe they did a few mod orange drums. I would doubt that this happened to psychedelic red as that color lasted all through the 70's(though the pattern changed in the mid 70's). I have a 1971 citrus set that has been citrus since it was made. here is the article I did for NSMD.

Interesting that the Astro finished drum was hiding some Citrus Mod. That's probably going to open up another can of worms! Just watch people start looking for Astro Standards! -probably almost as rare! -have you ever seen a complete Standard set in an Astro finish? I haven't! I didn't think they were very popular finishes, either, so it's interesting to read that one unpopular finish was used to cover over another unpopular finish! ;) The Strata finishes were the "mods" of the Standard line. And the real Mods (Orange and Citrus) were oyster finishes (where the oysters had bee fed LSD!).

Sheesh! Ludwig had NO idea what kind of monster they were creating for the future when they did this kind of stuff! HA! :)
