Vintage Gretsch wrap issue

Hi all!

My vintage Gretsch arrived, and as you can see from the photos, I have some wrap issues on the bass drum. One side shows some damage to the wrap itself, the other side just shows some lifting in the wrap. I want to keep the existing wrap.

I've never tried to repair a wrap before... sure I can google it, but I'd like to ask for some opinions, please. This is an expensive set to learn on.

Option 1: send it to Precision Drum. This is actually my first thought, since I am worried about my inexperience making the problem worse.

Option 2: use an Exacto knife and some high quality scissors to trim out the damaged part of the wrap and reglue it. It looks like there is enough overlap in the wrap to be able to dissect out the damage and still cover the drum.

Can you carefully reverse the overlap and put the damaged edge under the undamaged edge?

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

That may be past my skill level. I've been emailing Precision Drum, maybe they have some ideas.

This would be my vote! While it may not be cheap, just considering the size of the box plus labor, you know it will be done right. That, plus the fact that it's an excellent kit, in a great color! Let us know what you decide!

Forgot to mention that the Burgundy Sparkle looks great, with little-to-no fading. It seems that Gretsch drums from this time period, more than any other brand, suffered from breaking and cracking of the wrap at the overlap, due to the fact that the shells were never undersized. Add a wrap and now you have head fitment issues. When the repair is done, see if you can get a set of Remo Classic Fit heads for your kit. You won't regret it!
