Camco Lug questions....

I am almost done cleaning and polishing the metal pieces for my Oaklawn kit.

I would like to know if anybody can tell me the purpose of the metal strip inside the lugs? (Chroming process related?)

Also if anybody knows about when the base of the lugs went from flat (as pictured) to the later lugs that had two trenches on either side.

I am pretty sure this happened during the Oaklawn era. Thanks!

Is that a separate piece of metal or just part of the casting? It looks like part of the casting to me. It appears that the part of the mold for the center hollow part of the lug was in three pieces and that's why you see three sections.

It doesn't look to be part of the casting. It has a copper-ish tint to it that stands out from the rest of the lug. If I had to guess, I would say it was soldered in place, but I really don't know. In every instance though, it lines up with the insert hole as well as the screw holes.
