Well, it wouldn't had happened had I not stumbled across the red onyx. Actually, it was on cl for several months and I was watching it. He came down enough that I took a shot and offered him a grand, expecting him to say no. When he gave me the ok, I jumped on it. Btw, the black onyx sold yesterday, just hours after I had bought the red onyx.I'm not sure I agree with your analogy, I love Ludwig as much as I love Rogers. Since I already have a Rogers, got to find a Ludwig.
Big Ludwig fan here too, I get it!
Those two kits in red and black onyx are pretty rare as Headliner-type configurations in the larger sizes. Most of the 22, 13, 16 kits were built as Celebrity, Constellation or Starlighter type layouts, which are a little less comfortable to play because the mounted tom is quite far the the left looking from the drummer's position. I think you did quite well picking up the red onyx set for that kit of money.
Ever see this one of Bill Haley's Comets and the drummer playing a red onyx kit?

^ that's awesome, what a great singing voice
Big Ludwig fan here too, I have a '69' bdp, super classic 13, 16,22 rail mount , with what I guess was a ordered matching '68' 14 bdp floor, matches perfectly, all clear interiors, rounded bearing edges, the whole kit is like new condition, except some small pimples on the hoops ,all coated 10 mil top and bottom., all drums keystone badged. 1956 WFL bdp classic snare nob hardware . Can't imagine anything sounding better
Well, having owned and played Ludwig, Slingerland, Rogers, Grestch and Camco, I can honestly say Rogers had a slight edge. Mostly because of the hardware and build, sound is subjective, but there's no denying Rogers had the best hardware and quality, at least in the 60's era of drum manufacturing.
I'm still partial to that BMP Leedy you sold last year. That was a keeper. Still kicking myself for not snagging that one!
OK. Now, let's start the over/under wagering for the tenure of the the Red Onyx set in JR's possession. I'll set the over/under at one month, and I'll bet on the under........once again. He needs to dump the Rogers and forget about the Ludwig. What he needs is one of these in a Croc wrap.
in a Croc wrap.
He meant black diamond pearl, I use to own a Leedy in that finish.
