Ludwig "Hollywood" in WMP, Dec 1968

Loading...

Hi all,

I normally have nothing to offer for "show and tell," but I thought you might like to see this Dec 1968 "Hollywood" kit in WMP, that I picked up a few months ago. Average yellowing I think. Maybe a little less than average? And the photos aren't backwards - I'm a left-handed freak.

The Jazzfest that came with the kit was dated 1962 and it was nearly as yellow as a banana! Thankfully, Steve Bryant gave me a much whiter 1966 shell that he had "harvested" the hardware off of, for the Ringo/Gary Astridge "Starrfest" project. So, I put the 1962 hardware on this shell, and it's a perfect match! (Does anybody need a very yellow 1962 Jazzfest shell?)

This kit still has the original resonant heads on it, and the bass drum has the earlier style spurs. I find that these hold the drum much steadier than the more common "gull wing" spurs.

I plan to keep this kit indoors as my practice kit only, and not play it out, for fear of sunlight causing further yellowing.

Regards, MB

Whoa! That's a bright-white one! Makes mine look like a pale banana!

Thanks, MB

Say Johnny Ringo, that WMP kit must've been brand new when you took that photo? I've never seen such a brilliantly white WMP. I had to put on my sunglasses to study your photo.

Attached is a photo of the two snares I mentioned in my first post.

The 1962 very-yellow Jazzfest that came with the kit, and the much better matched 1966 Jazzfest that Steve Bryant gave me. Steve gave me the shell, only, and I took the hardware from the yellowed 1962 snare. Anyhow....

Whew, what a difference!

Ha, nope, I bought it like that about two years ago from a drum shop in Rhode Island for....wait for it....$1,000!

I'm not sure why they sold it so cheap or what they did to it, but it was one clean kit.

I need that shell too. Lol. I actually acquired a WFL WMP set last week with no snare and that yellow matches very close to the yellowing of my set..I have hardware. Your set looks beautiful. I had been wanting a vintage WMP set for years.

I just acquired these last Tuesday. Buddy Rich Super Classic set. I was so excited to get these. Been wanting a WMP set for years. No snare though. I put the rail mount and bass drum cymbal mounts away for safe keeping. The pic is a little brighter than they actually are. That shell matches really close, if not a dead on match to the bass drum and toms. Plus I have all the hardware for it. I was so lucky to get these. Spent four solid days taking every nut, screw, washer, bolt off and gave them a good cleaning. Be a shame to keep the snare apart from the rest of the family. Its a obvious great match. It would be thrilling to complete this set.

Hey...SOME people prefer the yellowed version! We call it patina! And it's a good idea to keep any vintage drum kit out of direct sunlight, but oftentimes, those old wraps changed colors due to long drawn-out chemical reactions that seem happen even when stored away from any harsh light. I really like the yellowed versions and to have a banana yellow one would be great. Mine is more of a butter yellow. Anyway, nice kit and have fun with it!

Several years ago, when I first got bitten by the vintage drum bug, I acquired this mid-1960s Rogers set in increments. I first got the bass drum and three toms. Then I acquired the snare drum. Finally, the canister throne came my way. I had some of the hardware since the 1960s and acquired more of it when I bought these drums. The snare drum had aged with more of a green hue than the light yellowing of the other drums and the throne. To me, this drum set's wrap and the larger pattern WMP used by Slingerland are what White Marine Pearl ought to be. I don't hate it, but I've never really warmed up to the wrap that Ludwig calls White Marine Pearl. Having expressed that opinion, I still want to say how nice your newly-acquired Ludwig drum set looks.
