Pearl President series 1966

I had a 4 piece kit in Gold Grain, Had the diamond cut looking lugs. When i sold it years ago, i said it was a 1969 kit because thats what i thought or found out. Mine had the Pearl President badges, single Rogers copy tom mount but mine had a weird composited shell unlike i have ever seen before and they were a reddish brown shell almost identical to the look of the 1980's Yamaha Stage series interiors or some of the recording customs with the dark interiors. I never had a 20" kick sound so deep and punchy with a brand new Aquarian superkick batter and a brand new Pearl muffled non ported front head. It seems like the first models had the rail mount.

Hey there,

Yes, starting in 1969- the Pearl President fiberglass shells are like a chocolate brown and quite thin. That sounds like the 1969 tom holder alright.

It had those thin diamond lugs (the only line to have them- a good identifier)

I thought i would add this photo for anyones reference. I took this photo from a picture i had so quality may not be that good. I believe this is a 1969? Pearl President 4-piece kit with Gold Grain wrap. Kit was near mint. Photo shown is only one i have before i found the matching hoop and rods and claws.

Wow. Very, very nice. It`s actually an excellent photo just like that because it can show one of the key identifiers- that chocolate brown fiberglass shell. Pearl went to a yellow fiber glass shell on it`s later Taiwanese fiberglass line that I can never get to tune/sound great. President fiberglass shells were different- extremely fine. When you are ready to sell that kit please PM me . Fantastic Sumo Dude

Hello Osakabop!!

I never knew Pearl even made a 24" kick drum back then.

In 1968, a kid at my school wanted to sell me his Pearl kit, it was a nice red sparkle, but Mom wouldn't pay the $250 he wanted, so I wound up keeping my crappy old set of Apollos! Probably came out of the same factory, but man....his were so much nicer!

The 24" President I have is a 1974 or 75- so into the era of larger rock drums- but the dark brown, thin fiberglass shells and the badge are all still the same President.

Thanks. It was a sweet looking kit. One of the shells had a tiny nick in the bearing edge and it looked weird like it wasnt wood. I did not know they were Fiberglass, I thought they were some type of composite material. Thanks for sharing that info. They had nicely cut bearing edges. Very very thin shells. I actually sold it for $400.00 about 4 years ago. Here is the story on the kit. I actually was in Walmart one day and seen the ad on the bulletin board. Said Pearl President drums- $125.00 with hardware and also had 13" Sabian aax fusion hi-hats with it. All the drums were missing the resonant hoops and etc. which i later found correct replacements. This is the strange part. I was on E-bay for over 2 years trying to find the matching steel hoop with matching inlay with no luck, but found and bought some Vintage Pearl inlay pieces which were Gold Grain but the pattern could have been better to match my other hoop. I was about to use them, but then i am at an estate sale buying some drum rack clamps and the lady says there is some drum shells on the side of the house free for the taking. So i walk over and there is some cheap black wrapped bass drum with cheap tko looking lugs with a nice metal hoop with the Gold Grain inlay in the hoop. This hoop was nice. It was a late 60's Pearl hoop with Gold Grain inlay. I could not believe it. What is the chance of that. NO B.S. Absolutely true.

Osaka: that 74-75 bass drum you have looks just like a Wood-Fiberglass bass i used to have.(same hardware) I actually still have a photo of those drums and will post a photo on here. It had the yellow fiberglass shell.
