24" Premier Bass Drum restoration

Loading...

I decided to restore and refinish the bass drum hoops. I was sanding one hoop while the other was clamped for sitting the glue.

For my surprise, I noticed a weak small spot in the wrap strip. I pressed with my fingernail and figured out a termite "tunnel". With a small screwdriver I followed the tunels until I cant find anymore weak wood spots. I realized that another small whole I found before should be the same issue.

Any ideas to prevent more future damage before I fill the wholes and tunnels?

I read this too late. The glue transparency is noticeable after clamping the shell. I thought immediately I should have use wood dust to give it some color. Is that your idea? What's the purpose of the diisononilphtalate?

Hi John,

Wood dust play its role as a filler and make the epoxy blend more hоmоgeneity and strength.

Diisononylphthalate is a plasticizer which make the blend more elastic and gives good ability to process with various tools. That used in the production of wood and composite master-models.

Cheers,

George.

The bass drum is ready for action. There are a couple of things I want to do, like straighten up the tension rods and add missing washers. Anyway, I don't have free time to do it right now so I decided to put the heads on, to keep the shell and hoops with tension.

At first I decided to leave the hoops with that funky look but later I changed my mind. There were many cracks and dents. Now I think I made the right thing. The kit is in very nice condition and looking good. Cheers
