I've had the pleasure of spending a good deal of time with Jim in the drum repair shop he ran for the Brook Mays/H&H Music chain, and later on at his own shop. He custom-made some small parts for a couple of vintage snare drums that I brought to him and taught me a lot about how to tweak my drums. Since we moved 250 miles away to the Houston area, I miss the occasional visits with Jim at his little shop of wonders.

leedybdp! As many of us may have found out, Jim's personality, and opinions, aren't for everyone! Jim and I have built up a very good relationship over the years and I really enjoy talking to him and learning from him. He can be a real character!

slingerfan! My leg brackets still had two of the three original hex buttons! I'll store the two original buttons and use all three of Jim's hex buttons. It's going to take quite a bit of time until the kit is done. The original Sparkling Red Pearl wrap has real cosmetic issues that can't be fixed, so I'm deciding if I want to re-wrap them. Since this is a kit I have no intention of flipping, I'm not worried about the resale value!-Mark

Mark, I believe I saw them on eBay. 2R kit listed as a "Jet", Sep./Oct. '65 date stamps, metal BD hoops, white flecks in the red sparkle?

Yep, that's the one! I wasn't able to convince the seller that this was simply a Modern Solo 2R, but ordered with the COB bass drum hoops and Snap-On pedal. He was convinced it was a "Jet"! Oh well! Sadly, there are structural issues with the bass drum, but I'll go into that when I start a separate post on the kit.

How to put this delicately; You may have disregarded your own "golden rule" on these (LOL). Sometimes a project just calls to you though. Anticipating great things here.

I wouldn't hesitate to do the re-wrap. If the drums were mine, I'd want to wrap them in a period-correct wrap.

This is a tough one! I've never seen so many micro-cracks in a wrap this bad before. I have a collection of mid-60's Slingerland snare drums that are wrapped in original glass glitters and none of them have this issue. In regards to the Modern Solo kit, it seems like it was caused by constant temperature changes that opened up little fissures in the wrap! I'm not in any rush to restore the kit, so we'll see how this eventually plays out.

If I do decide to re-wrap these, it will be in Red Glass Glitter. I removed wrap from mid-60's Slingerland drums in the past. It's a lot of work due to the glue that was used back then. If I do decide on this course of action, I'd prep the shells myself and then send them to Precision for wrapping. It wouldn't be cheap, that's for sure!!

Mark... Here's a drum set that I had to let go in order to reduce the number of vintage sets in my little collection for our new downsized house. I loved these drums. But, I opted to keep another Slingerland set with 12-14-20 dimensions. This 1966 Red Sparkle (glass glitter?) set consists of 9x13, 16x16, 14x22, and matching six lug snare drum. All indications are that the drum set was born together with the exception of the snare drum that I acquired separately. In retrospect, my reduction in the number of drum sets I have has to do with my age. Although, I'm in relatively good health for my age, I'm not going to live forever. One of our two kids and her husband play guitars and basses. They already have a vintage Slingerland drum set that helped my daughter to get many years ago. Our son and his wife are not musical instrument players. My wife is not a musician. So, when I'm gone, I don't want them overburdened with a houseful of vintage drums and all the go-withs to dispose of.

Leedybdp : You are certainly not alone. I'm also in downsize mode at 72.

I finally got to seriously thinking about it awhile back and asked myself " what are you going to do with all this music gear I've been collecting for 50 + years ?!? " I don't want to burden my family with it. I'm down to 6 drum kits from 12. I've been using Reverb and CL to slowly sell off gear for the last couple of years.

I love it but can't take the gear with me. Most of my gear is player quality and my goal is to get it to someone that will appreciate and use it. I don't expect top dollar but I don't want it to be sold for $50 at a garage sale out of desperation and ignorance by my family. The buck stops here ... that the responsibility is mine.

Doug... I'm three years older than you. But, I could have written the same post as you. Two of my four drum sets are player's grade and the other two are more collector's grade--almost museum quality. My cocktail set is player's grade. All of my many vintage A Zildjians are in high quality player/collector condition. I would like the gear to go to people who will take good care of it and use it to make music. I also want my survivors to get good money for the drums and go-withs.
