If you get Turner Movie Channel then check out this movie, on now. It's an English film (1962) about a jazz drummer (Patrick McGoohan) who wants to start a band. He actually learned to play the drums specifically for this part and aquits himself amazingly well especially for a novice. He plays on a Trixon Luxus kit. Charlie Mingus and Dave Brubeck are also featured.
All Night Long: check it out
I remember seeing clips from this, of Patrick playing. I'll have to watch, beginning to end. I've always enjoyed his acting in the Prisoner and Columbo.
He was also very good as the douchebag warden in Escape from Alcatraz. he played off of Clint Eastwood very convincingly.

Yes and I liked those as well. And also "Secret Agent Man", and it's predecessor series "Danger Man"....oh sorry, probably was before your time.
I've watched the clip twice and I have some observations.
If he is really playing (and he looks very convincing!), then the sound is just slightly off from the film action. There is at least a brass section playing which doesn't appear in the clip except for a single sax and trumpet player. There are also several angled shots in the solo scene which would take a lot of cameras to execute, so I say this was shot in several takes and then spliced together, hence the argument for a pre-recorded soundtrack.
His grip looks good, but his wrist execution is stiff and not at all relaxed like someone of his characters ability would be. I found a minor reference in a comment section of YouTube that Joe Morello may have actually played the soundtrack, but it doesn't sound like Morello to me.

The cymbals during most of that clip look like the ones that came along with the kid's drumsets at K mart. But then...right at the end with the very last cymbal crash, the cymbal that the camera shows clearly is a genuine Zildjian! So yes, there was definitely some funny stuff going on here as far as the playing/editing goes. And I think those junk cymbals that were shown earlier were probably Ajax.
