I had this drum appraised. The appraiser dated it from the early 60s, but it has no date stamp or serial number. The keystone badge has the old-style Ludwig logo which reads at the bottom Ludwig Drum Co. Chicago U.S.A. It has a round knob for the dampener., instead of the baseball bat. It was appraised for a rather large sum, I'm getting ready to sell it, and I'd like to give potential buyers as much info as possible. Can anyone help me out?
Dating Ludwig 401
I can't really add anything more than what you already know about the drum. They did come with the round knob tone control and not the baseball bat. Very cool drum! Wish that I could come across one of those that I could actually afford!
Well, unless my eyes and computer monitor are deceiving me, that appears to be a lacquered brass shell from sometime around 1961-early 1963 (pre serial # keystone badge). If it's all original it's quite a desirable drum and you shouldn't have any trouble selling it. I'd guess it's worth at least $1K and probably more. A lot depends on the overall condition, although these are rare (most were chrome plated).
Additional pictures would help, such as a close up of the badge. Pictures of the interior of the drum could also verify that it is what it appears to be.
That's a drum that any Ludwig afficianado would be thrilled to own, myself included, although it's likely out of my price range. The best way to get top dollar would likely be ebay, with a proper description the right people should see the drum and the market will decide what the top dollar is. My guess would be between $1k and 1.5K but it could be even more, depending on how many folks are lusting after such a drum. If you want to avoid ebay I guess you could ask for offers but it will be tougher to get the same sort of global visibility that way.
All this hinges on everything being original to the drum (other than heads of course).
Basically KO nailed it. KO is a bit conservative on price imo. A nice shiny one like your drum, without scratches and dents go for 2K and up. I date it late 1960-early 1962 (when the baseball bat muffler came into use).

Mr. Carlos is much more in tune with this upper echelon market than I am so I'd say his estimate is going to be more accurate. I tend to be conservative when it comes to pricing estimates, probably because I'm "cheap".
The chrome plated versions are more common but still fairly well sought after. This would be essentially the same drum minus the plating.
Thankd for your input and assistance. and messages. The drum has already sold.
Take care.
