Interesting question, slingerfan, and I don't think I could answer it objectively. I will say, however, that these drums produce a familiar, "classic" vintage American drum tone.

Over the last several years, I've made a conscious decision to home in on specific sounds that I've decided are my personal favorites and that are also applicable to the music I play, which is popular music from the 1960's through today, with a focus on '60's through the early '80's. My favorite drum sounds are from all the old '60's soul records (Muscle Shoals, Stax, Motown, etc...) and from pop records made in the late '70's to early '80's (Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Toto, etc...). To get even more specific, I'll give examples of both. "In The Midnight Hour" from Wilson Pickett perfectly captures that '60's old soul drum sound for me, while "All Night Long" from Lionel Richie perfectly captures the '80's pop sound.

Each drum sound is very different, yet equally pleasing to me. So for me, these Camco drums easily achieve the old soul drum sound I'm looking for. Took me less than 10 minutes to get "that" sound. I wouldn't expect them to then try to achieve the '80's pop sound I'm also after, so for that I have my early 80's Yamaha 9000GA drums, which are the drums that many of those cats used on those hits... think Gadd, JR Robinson, the Marotta brothers, Andy Newmark, Ndugu, etc... Just as with the Camco drums achieving the old soul sound so easily, so too do my Yamaha drums achieve the '80's pop sound so easily.

All to say that, while the Camco drums produce a beautiful and easy to achieve tone, I don't think I could call them the best I've ever heard, because there simply is no best to me, only different.

I had to do the rubber band trick on the mounted tom muffler. When it dries up, I'm going to use your fishing line hack.

You only have to do it once when you use fishing line and you can use whatever amount is needed since it comes in a large spool...
