Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste

it's Mardi Gras time again. This makes me think of one of the most imitated drummers of all time. Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste originated the funk groove that most of us have tried like hell to imitate even though most of us have failed to capture the feel of Mr. Modeliste. This founding member of the Meters continues to set the bar higher than most drummers can clear.https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=The+Meters+videos&view=detail&mid=33A175F7E8DC90A277A633A175F7E8DC90A277A6&FORM=VIRE

I love Zig's playing and always have, from the time I saw The Meters at the Bottom LIne in NYC. Killer player. We're friends on FB.

Zigaboo is still going strong for a man of his age (born in 1948). Every so often, he will play a gig with the other surviving members of the Meters.

One of my favorite drummers of all time. For another funky New Orleans cat, check out James Black. He was also an accomplished jazz drummer. But his funk game is very top shelf on Eddie Bo's "Hook and Sling" Part 2. Look it up.

That was Dr. John with the intro to that one right? I’m sad he’s gone. Loved the Meters, especially the Jungle Man song...first time hearing them. What kind of kit was he playing? Loved the white satin swirl mismatched concert tom.

Stop stringing and tuning your instrument, make music now.

Hook and Sling is a serious cut & long time favourite! "Check Your Bucket', "We're Doing It(Thang)Part One", "Live it up", "Can You Handle It"! & that intro on "Lover and A Friend" just kills me!! So mean, yet so lazy!!

James Black, Earl Palmer, Idris Muhammad, John Boudreaux, Zig, all these cats know how to cook up a mean gumbo.

Boudreaux's drumming with Dr. John is just classic. This Allen Toussaint track with John Boudreaux on drums (that you might recognize from an Axe deodorant commercial) is a bit more subdued, but so groovy:

Ooooops, all most forgot Smokey Johnson snaking his way through this killer track

Yup! Betty Harris' "There's a Break in The Road" is a clinic in linear swamp funk. That was James Black also I'm 99% sure. To play with that much grease and control while being so syncopated at such a slow tempo...serious stuff.
