That all depends on the brand of drums. You stated that you're rating the high demand/short supply Ludwig wraps. Fanciers of Gretsch, Rogers, Slingerland, and other brands have the same issue with their favorite brands. This would make for a very interesting topic on our forum.
I think you mean oyster pearls, specifically?
Ludwig?....prrrrrrrobably the rarest is pink oyster....most sought after....for a drum set...probably the original black oyster because of the Ringo connection.
I'd guess there are probably some older Ludwig oysters that might be rarer.
Having said that...I'm not sure whether the psych red, citrus mod and mod orange are considered as oysters...they have the same general swirliness.
So on that subject how rare is a 65 pink oyster Hollywood missing a hang tom
Black oyster isn't rare at all. It was the best selling wrap for a few years thanks to Ringo. Despite that there is only so much of it for sale at any given time and demand tends to exceed supply so the price is driven upward.
Of "Oyster" style wraps on Ludwigs it's hard to say which one for certain but either Oyster Pink or Citrus Mod (the mods are essentially oyster style wraps done in crazy colors) are the lowest production and the hardest to find.
I have to say pink oyster pearl is the rarest. I looked at the Walopus version and it's hideous; completely wrong.
A antique shop has a pink oyster super classic 65 and it has original Tom Mount and some one added a Ceter dual Tom Mount what a waste
Yeah no one said that black oyster is rare. The OP asked which is the most sought-after. And I answered that I think black oyster is the most sought after BECAUSE of Ringo. So there ya go.
I like the uncommon wraps used by Slingerland, Leedy, Rogers, Gretsch, and Walberg & Auge. I currently have a Pink Glass Glitter--not champagne--Leedy Shelly Manne snare drum and a Purple Diamond Pearl Walberg & Auge Perfection snare. I used to own a full set of Rogers Pink Strata (Pink Oyster) Pearl drums.
