I sure wish somebody had explained that to me as I tried to install one from Chicago Drum today and it turned to crap. I used the flared screw method that so many have said works (yes, I searched and found a lot of "mis"information before proceeding). But...I guess the Chicago Drum grommets are thicker than most. The tool I made is exactly like the Jammin' Sams tool and was sized perfectly. It cannot turn the raw end of the ferule inward, making it rounded as in factory assembly. Mine split and just flared out as one might expect. Perhaps the ferule was too long, but this is what was highly recommended to me as correct 3 ply size.

Who is selling a tool that works for these at best price. MyOldKentuckyDrums doesn't seem to exist, Precision Drum links are not working. I can upload pics of how it turned out tomorrow if necessary. Pic is from Jammin' Sams sight.

I've got the Slingerland grommet tool! You're welcome to use it. I can send it to you via USPS Priority Mail. When you're done, just ship it back to me the same way. You'll only have to pay the cost of a small Priority Mail box, which should be only around $8.

To answer my own question and help other dummies, like me!

1. Jim Moritz at Chicago Drum sells the best (what I used), maybe only, grommet for Slingerland. But one size does NOT fit all. For whatever reason, my shell at the grommet is thinner than others (painted, not wrapped?), so the grommet will need to be cut/ground down on the end so that "no more than 1/16" protrudes when inserted with the badge. Otherwise what happened to me will happen to you.

2. The flathead/countersunk bolt should only be used to START the flare, then use a bolt with a flat washer to finish it off properly as factory looks.

4. Not an expensive lesson, but more research might have solved the issue, but I did do a good bit...just didn't find this vid!

This is very important info:

They do not tell you this.

Jerry Jenkins did one in front of me.

He cut the grommet length with a dremel with a small carborundum cut off wheel.

Then used the tapered head screw, nylon and steel washers and nuts.

I have butchered a few.

Very kind of you! Can you please post a picture of that tool? After seeing Jim's video, I think I will try that.

Here are some pictures I just took...

The tool didn't come with any instructions, but I figured that the die with the curved inset goes on the inside, which it did! It will properly flare and rollover the grommet back onto the shell. Comes with two spacers that go inside the grommet; the longer one for 5-ply shells and the shorter spacer for 3-ply shells.

The last pictures shows a 5-ply grommet in the tool. Hope this helps!

Mark (idrum4fun) has the right tool. Seems silly not to take him up on his generous offer. My feeling is the rollover of the grommet will not be 100% correct using the nut & bolt method.
