Creating stain fade?

Loading...

I am restoring an old MIJ set that has good wood shells with an unusually nice grain (mahogany) I'd like to stain them - but fade it as in the tobacco burst seen on the Gretsch Renown... I have rewrapped over 20 sets, have painted cars and am an airbrush artist. I have good knowledge of wood refinishing but have never sprayed a stain. If I stain the shells with a wipe-on honey color, dry and then spray the ends with a red mahogany stain- would it work? I know with paint I could easily replicate a Duco finish so technique is not my issue- just wondering if there is a 'trick' I need to know or even if stain can be sprayed light to dark. I've seen people spray stain their decks but that is put on thick.... Thanks for any advice!- JD (and if this has been covered somewhere please give a link- thanks!)

Do it just like paint. use a solid stain, I think too many layers will be required if you use a semi solid to get the right burst.

I have never tried this but the drum shop where I worked in the 1970's had some tobacco burst finishes done by a gentleman who painted hot rods. I was told he obtained the fade effect by using various thicknesses of gauze covering with multiple coats of spray paint. Maybe someone has invented a better method since then, but I thought I would pass this along. It could also be that they were pulling my leg, I was even more gullible in my misspent youth...

I wanted to stain to bring out the grain/ afraid paint would cover it too much unless thinned dramatically- I was also told sprayed stain doesn't dry well and stays sticky unless rubbed out- thus defeating the fade look!- HOWEVER I found water based wood tints- which may be the answer- thanks all-
